Washington dominated the second and third quarters and picked up its first girls basketball win of the season last Friday at Timberland High School.

The Lady Jays (1-2) outscored the Wolves 28-7 in the second and third quarters combined in a 57-35 victory.

“This was the best game we’ve played so far in our young season,” said Washington Head Coach Adam Fischer. “It was truly a team effort from the beginning.”

Washington trailed 16-10 after one quarter, but took control of the game from there.

The Lady Jays went on a 15-4 run during the second quarter to take a 25-20 halftime advantage.

The momentum continued in the third quarter for the Lady Jays, who outscored Timberland 13-3, increasing their lead to 38-23.

“We got off to a slow start on the road and were down 10-2 real early. To the credit of my girls, we kept fighting back and got to the locker room at halftime with a lead,” Fischer said. “We scored the first five buckets of the second half and never looked back.”

The Lady Jays had a 19-12 fourth-quarter advantage. Following the opening quarter, Washington outscored Timberland, 47-19.

“We were very aggressive on defense in the final three quarters and rebounded the ball extremely well,” Fischer said. “We moved the ball well against their zone and made the open shots we found for ourselves.”

Kaitlin Evans led three Washington players in double figures with 13 points.

Kirstie Leslie added 11 points, going 7-8 from the free-throw line.

Courtney Kedroski finished with 10 points.

Rachel Kackley scored eight points, going 4-6 from the foul line. Paige Carpenter pitched in with six points.

Alex Ready collected four points. Helena Ballmann scored three points. Hannah Leslie had two points. Katie Trigg also played. Megan Bauche and Megan Freitag both were out with injuries.

“Katie and Helena both gave me great minutes off the bench,” Fischer said.

Sam Domalewski scored 12 points for Timberland (0-5). Courtney Ferguson added 10 points.

Washington was 18-22 from the free-throw line. Timberland was 0-5.

The Lady Jays opened GAC Central action Tuesday against Ft. Zumwalt East. They host Warrenton Thursday and Lindbergh Friday at 6 p.m.

Washington is seeded fifth for next week’s Sullivan Tournament. The Lady Jays play fourth-seeded Borgia in the opening round Monday at 4 p.m.
