St. Clair traveled to Farmington Saturday to begin its baseball season with a doubleheader against the Knights.

Farmington swept the twin bill, winning the opener 7-3 and the nightcap, 13-3.

“This was only our third time on a baseball field this season, so overall, I thought we played pretty well,” said St. Clair Head Coach Rob Hauck. “We learned some things that we need to improve on and saw some really great potential for our team. We moved some people around so that we could see what worked and what did not.”

The Bulldogs’ game Monday at Washington in the Four Rivers Classic was rained out and rescheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Ronsick Field.

St. Clair (0-2) now is scheduled to open the event Wednesday at home against Festus at 4:30 p.m.

The winner of St. Clair’s pool will host the championship bracket on Saturday.

First Game

Jake Oermann tossed a complete game for St. Clair in the first game against Farmington and took the loss.

In six innings of work, he allowed seven runs, three earned, on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

St. Clair collected four hits in the contest.

Dylon Nappier, a junior infielder, was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Ayden Carey, a senior infielder, was 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Austin Gotway, a senior shortstop, was 1-3 with a double, a walk and a run.

Oermann was 1-3 at the plate.

Brenden Murphy, a senior outfielder/pitcher, had one RBI.

“We had four errors in the first game that cost us, but that happens,” Hauck said. “We’ll learn from it and hopefully do better our next time out.”

Second Game

St. Clair used three pitchers in the second game of the doubleheader.

Blake Dierking, a senior, pitched the first three innings and suffered the loss. He allowed six runs, three earned, on five hits and five walks.

Greg Marler, a senior, worked one inning in relief. He allowed three runs, three earned, on two hits and two walks.

Kody Halmich, a freshman, worked two innings on the mound. He allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

St. Clair collected 10 hits in the second game.

Murphy led the way by going 3-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run.

Halmich was 2-3 with a run scored.

Dierking was 1-2 with a double, one walk and one RBI.

Gotway was 1-2 with a double and a walk.

Carey added one hit and one run.

“We hit better the second game with 10 total hits, but our pitching was not there like we needed it to be,” Hauck said. “Our goal is to continue to improve and get better every time we step on the field.”

Anna Reed, a standout softball player at St. Clair, once again is playing baseball for the Bulldogs this spring.

“Anna has been playing for the baseball team for her entire high school career. This is her first opportunity to step in at the varsity level,” Hauck said. “She currently is out with a back injury and we’re not sure of a time table for her return. While she is out, we are using her to help guide some of our younger players and help them develop their swings and mental approaches while playing the game. When she returns, we’ll look into mixing her into our lineup. Her injury has prevented us from getting a real look at what she can do at this level.”

Hauck sees potential in the Bulldogs this season.

“For not really getting out on the diamond much this year, I was excited to see where we were,” Hauck said. “I think this team has a lot of potential this season.”

Jeff Thornsberry, former Sullivan Head Coach and Pacific Assistant Coach, is an assistant coach for the Bulldogs this season.

Tim Isgrig, Garan McCuskey and Zach Hoffman also are assistant coaches.
