Recording three wins in three days under two coaches, the Borgia volleyball Lady Knights continued their winning streak this week.

Borgia (23-2-1, 8-0) defeated Duchesne in three games Tuesday, 25-16, 27-29, 25-18. The Lady Knights then swept Hermann Wednesday, 25-20, 25-15, and Rosati-Kain Thursday, 25-13, 25-18.

Head Coach Brad Bruns missed the first two matches this week while ill.

Assistant Coach Andy Halaz ran the team for the Duchesne and Hermann matches. Bruns returned to the bench Thursday.

“The coaches did an awesome job this week,” Bruns said. “I’m blessed with an amazing staff this year that I can rely on. We all work well together. It proves that there is not one person or player who makes the difference on the team. It takes everyone to contribute, all 14 players and all five coaches.”

Borgia’s winning streak now is up to 12 in a row. Borgia’s last loss came Sept. 21 in the Springfield Classic to Republic.

“We just need to make sure we’re ready for every opponent,” Bruns said. “Every opponent is a threat to us.”

Duchesne

So far in AAA Large Division play, nobody has given the Lady Knights more trouble than Duchesne.

In the season opener, Duchesne forced the Lady Knights to a three-game match in St. Charles.

And Tuesday, Duchesne did the same thing. While Borgia completed the season sweep, 25-16, 27-29, 25-18, it wasn’t without problems.

“It was difficult,” Halaz said. “They had the momentum but we were preaching to our girls to stay within our own style of ball. We felt if we could do that, we would be OK. They kept it close throughout the first 10 points and then we were able to pull away just by sticking to our own style of volleyball.”

Borgia won the first game and held an edge as much as seven points. Duchesne trailed 22-17 before coming back to tie it and send the match beyond the 25-point plateau. The Lady Pioneers won, 29-27, to force a third game.

“The passing broke down and we were unable to get any quality swings,” Halaz said. “Duchesne is a real solid team. They are very balanced. To win, you have to play your style of ball well. We did it for most of the match, but Duchesne isn’t going to give up on us.”

This time, Borgia was able to move ahead and maintain its lead, winning 25-18.

Sophomore Emma Kriete led the team with 11 kills and no errors on 24 attempts for a .458 attack percentage. She also had two aces, two assists and four digs.

Freshman Audrey Arand also recorded 11 kills in the match. She added seven digs and two aces.

Junior Jordan Kriete ripped nine kills while hitting .500 while leading the team with 13 digs.

Senior Janie Arand posted three kills with 31 assists, six digs, two aces and two total blocks.

Senior Sarah Geatley posted two kills and one block.

Junior Alivia Brinker posted 10 digs with three aces.

Junior Allie Marquart recorded seven digs. Junior Molly Arand had four digs. Sophomore Liz Frederick closed with one dig

Hermann

Borgia hosted the Lady Bearcats Wednesday in a rematch of last week’s Hermann Tournament championship, winning 25-20, 25-15.

“Even from his sickbed, Brad was helping us out with a good scouting report,” Halaz said. “Our girls dictated the tempo which is something we’ve been preaching to them no matter who we play. If we can do better in ball control and hustle, we’ll have a solid performance.”

The first game started out close as the teams split the first 10 points.

Borgia started to forge ahead and grabbed a 22-15 lead on an ace by Emma Kriete.

Hermann fought back and scored five of the next seven points before Borgia closed out the game when Janie Arand smacked down a pass which drifted over the net, but not until Hermann had scored 20 points.

“As a coach, you teach them to not get complacent and when we build a sizeable lead, we have a tendency to relax,” Halaz said. “It’s frustrating. We’re working out the kinks. We know that any opponent can come back. Momentum is a big thing in this sport. The playoffs are coming up. One inconsistent match and our season ends earlier than we would like it to.”

In the second game, Borgia jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Lady Knights led 20-10 when Hermann started to come back this time. Borgia was able to close out the match with a 25-15 victory.

Audrey Arand led Borgia with seven kills while adding five digs.

The Kriete cousins, Emma and Jordan, each had six kills. Emma added three assists, two aces, four digs and two blocks. Jordan also had one assist and five digs.

Janie Arand closed with three kills, 14 assists, three digs, one ace and a block.

Geatley posted three kills, one ace and two digs.

Brinker recorded a kill, an ace and 10 digs.

Frederick ended with three total blocks and a dig.

Marquart had four digs while Molly Arand added two. Senior Clara Blatt recorded one dig.

Also seeing action were junior Maddie Toelke and freshman Meredith Roach.

Rosati-Kain

While Borgia won in two games over the Kougars, a team Borgia beat in three in St. Louis Sept. 9, Bruns felt the team played a bit sluggish.

“The girls did some good things tonight, but we still have a lot of things we need to work on,” Bruns said. “Our serve receive is looking better, but we’re still making too many unforced errors. We’re letting teams come back and score points on us again toward the end of games. That’s something we need to clean up.”

Borgia hit .333 in the match with the Kriete cousins, Emma and Jordan, leading the way.

Emma Kriete had eight kills while hitting .500. She added two digs, two blocks and one ace.

Jordan Kriete posted eight kills while hitting .467. She also had four digs and one ace.

Geatley recorded four kills, two aces, two digs and two total blocks.

Janie Arand had two kills, 20 assists, two aces, five digs and one block.

Brinker paced the team with eight digs while Marquart and Audrey Arand each added four and Molly Arand ended with three.

Audrey Arand and Brinker each served aces. Borgia had eight in the match.
