Sandwiching wins around a semifinal loss, the Borgia softball Lady Knights (13-8) captured third place Saturday at the Montgomery County Tournament.
Borgia opened with a 16-5 win over Hannibal before losing 3-2 to Silex.
Borgia defeated Clopton for third place, 2-0.
Borgia Head Coach Stan Westhoff reported both wins ended with 5-3-2 double plays.
“Clopton (in the third-place game) had a runner on third with one out when we had a sharp grounder to third, looked the runner back, threw out the girl at first and then threw home to nail the runner trying to score from third,” Westhoff said. “It was a fitting finish to a tournament that has always provided it good challenge in the last third of the season. It is a good tune-up for the district tournament.”
Borgia won 13-9 over Bishop DuBourg Monday.
“It was a big win, giving us sole possession of second in the conference behind St. Dominic,” Westhoff said.
“We hit well and Rachel Boley pitched the entire game (five innings),” Westhoff said. “There were any number of hitting stars and Megan Jensen and Rachel both hit the ball well.”
Borgia’s big inning was the second, where it scored nine runs to make it 11-1. Borgia scored five times in the third. Hannibal scored twice in the third and twice in the fifth.
Taylor Nadler had the only extra-base hit, a double, while also walking and scoring three times.
Jensen had two hits, one run, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Others with hits were Boley, Katelyn Gratza, Kaylee Heggemann, Michaela Morhaus, Madelyn Tuepker and Cali Witte. Elizabeth Westhoff walked twice and scored.
Borgia gave the eventual champion a run for its money but lost, 3-2. That loss ended Borgia’s six-game winning streak.
“We lost the semifinal game to Silex, eventual champs if my sources are correct, 3-2,” Westhoff said. “It was a game marred with controversial calls, but it was well-thrown by both pitchers and well played by both teams. Silex has been a major player in the state tournament in Class 2 over the years.
Boley drove in both runs for Borgia.
Silex took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the third. Borgia got both of its runs in the fourth.
Witte pitched and allowed three runs (none earned) on five hits and one walk. She struck out six.
Boley had Borgia’s lone hit. Tuepker and Nadler scored. Nadler walked three times in the game and stole a base.
Borgia closed out the tournament with a 2-0 win over Clopton to claim third place.
“We won the third-place game against perennial power, Clopton,” Westhoff said.
Borgia scored its runs in the second and fourth innings.
“Cali Witte threw a masterful game and solid defense in the field led the way,” Westhoff said.
Witte allowed two hits and three walks while striking out one in the shutout.
Boley and Jensen drove in runs.
Boley had two hits, including a double. She also scored.
Gratza, Jensen and Nadler ahd the other hits. Morhaus scored the other run. Nadler tripled. Westhoff walked and Heggemann added a sacrifice.
Borgia won a wild one at DuBourg Monday. Each team scored twice in the first. DuBourg led 4-3 after two innings and the teams were tied 5-5 in the third.
Borgia scored five times in the sixth and three times in the seventh. DuBourg scored four times in the bottom of that inning.
Nadler doubled twice and had three hits overall.
