Waiting for the start of district playoff action, both Borgia basketball teams are looking back at their first season in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association.

Borgia’s girls won the AAA Large Division championship while the boys settled for second place in the Large Division.

Stacia Parsell’s Lady Knights enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season in the AAA Large Division. Borgia stands at 18-6 overall and finished league play at 7-1.

Borgia’s season included two wins over AAA Small Division winner St. Charles Lutheran (21-4, 8-0). Borgia won a home game against the Lady Cougars and also captured the AAA Showcase game against that team at St. Dominic.

Borgia also defeated the second-place team in the Small Division, Cardinal Ritter (18-6, 6-2). The Lady Knights won over Cardinal Ritter in the opening round of the Borgia Tournament.

Duchesne finished second in the league with a 13-10 overall record, 5-2 in the league. Duchesne was the only team to beat Borgia in AAA play this season.

Perennial league power St. Dominic finished third, going 3-4 in league play. The Lady Crusaders are 11-11 overall entering this week.

Bishop DuBourg was fourth at 2-5 in the league. The Lady Cavaliers were 11-12 entering play this week.

Rosati-Kain finished the league schedule at 1-6. The Kougars entered this week at 7-16.

Individually, junior Janie Arand led the league in scoring with 15.8 points per contest while senior Katie Lindemann was third in the loop at 13.7 points per game.

DuBourg’s Tiara Fitzpatrick was second at 14.4 points per game.

Arand was second in three-point baskets made with 45. Sophomore Cassandra Halsted was second in free-throw percentage while Arand was third.

Junior Emily Grahl led the league in assists at 4.75 per game.

Grahl also ranked third in steals while sophomore Molly Arand ranked fifth.

Lindemann was second in the league in rebounding with 8.5 boards per game.

Borgia’s boys placed second in the AAA Large Division with an overall record of 17-8 and a league mark of 6-2.

Both losses came to league champion Duchesne, which went 20-3 overall and 8-0 in the league.

St. Dominic (14-7, 3-4) was third while Bishop DuBourg and St. Mary’s won one game apiece.

Borgia also won its AAA Showcase game over O’Fallon Christian, which finished second in the Small Division with a 6-2 league record. Cardinal Ritter won the Small Division title, but Christian was the only division team to beat the Lions.

In league stats, Borgia senior Jordan Miller was the team’s top scorer at 14.4 points per game, good for fifth in the Large Division. Senior Casey Kuchem averaged 11.1 points per game, good for eighth in the division.

Miller tied DuBourg’s Joe Carr for most three-point baskets made at 53.

Miller led the league in free-throw percentage at 82.5 percent while pacing the Large Division in assists per game (3.96) and steals per game (2.26).

Kuchem was second in blocked shots per game at 1.56 and led the Knights in rebounding with 5.9 boards per contest. That was good for eighth in the division.
