Hermann Places Third; New Haven Finishes Fourth

COLUMBIA — What a difference a day makes.

Less than 20 hours after losing in the MSHSAA Class 3 state semifinals to Ash Grove, the Hermann Lady Bearcats closed out their girls basketball season with the third-place trophy by beating Saxony Lutheran, 68-53.

The Lady Bearcats closed out the season with a 28-2 record. Saxony Lutheran finished 24-6.

Hermann led 16-13 after one quarter and held a slim 26-24 lead at the intermission.

The Lady Bearcats came alive in the second half, outscoring Saxony Lutheran by a 42-29 score.

Hermann led 47-38 after three quarters and continued to build from there.

The Lady Bearcats found their comfort zone shooting the ball, hitting eight three-point baskets. Overall, Hermann was 21-40 from the field and 18-25 from the free-throw line.

Senior Karinne Lane, one of six graduating players for the Lady Bearcats, paced the team with 26 points while adding three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Lane was 7-11 from the free-throw line and hit three three-point baskets.

Junior Tesla Ruediger followed her 13-point effort in the semifinals with 18 points Friday afternoon. She added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. She went 11-12 from the free-throw line and knocked down one three-point shot.

Senior Kirsten Leimkuehler was Hermann’s third player in double digits with 10 points, including two three-point baskets.

Senior Jamie Gleeson scored six points, but was limited to just 21 minutes of action after getting into foul trouble. She also had three blocked shots and one rebound.

Senior Kali Stiers posted six points while leading the team with nine rebounds. She also had three assists.

Senior Haley Stiers recorded Hermann’s other two points. She also had two rebounds.

Sophomore Cameron Hackmann recorded two assists and one rebound.

Hermann’s sixth senior, Kara Kley, also played.

Saxony Lutheran, a sophomore-dominated team, was paced by sophomore Raegan Wieser’s 16 points. She also had five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Brianna Mueller, another sophomore, posted 12 points with one steal.

The team graduates one senior, Maci Daniel, who posted two points, three rebounds and two assists.

New Franklin 51, New Haven 38

Another Four Rivers Conference school did not have the same luck in the Class 2 third-place game.

New Haven (22-10) fell to New Franklin (29-2) by a 51-38 score. It was the third consecutive year that the Lady Shamrocks played in the state championships. New Haven placed second during the previous two seasons.

The two teams were tied 9-9 after one quarter and 18-18 at the half.

New Franklin established a 35-30 lead after three quarters and extended that in the fourth quarter.

Jasmyne Boggs was the key for New Franklin, netting 19 points with 12 rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and one steal.

New Haven had two players hit double figures in scoring. Senior Rachel Steinhoff scored 14 points with six rebounds and two assists.

Senior Stephanie Gerling ended with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist.

Senior Kayla Meyer netted six points with seven rebounds for New Haven.

Senior Emily Kallmeyer posted four points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Junior Stephanie Scheer had two points and one assist.

And junior Megan Shockley scored two points with three rebounds.

New Haven graduates six seniors from this year's team with Steinhoff, Gerling, Meyer and Kallmeyer being joined by Meghan Brown and Olivia Fleer. Brown and Fleer played as well.
