Three members of the Washington High School golf team have advanced to sectional competition.

Playing in the Class 4 District 4 Tournament Tuesday at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters, the Blue Jays finished in a tie for third place in the team standings.

The top two teams and the top 15 individuals not from the two qualifying teams advanced to the sectional meet.

Timberland won the district title with a team score of 329. Francis Howell also qualified, placing second with 339.

Washington and Holt tied for third-place honors with scores of 344.

Troy finished fifth with 360 followed by Ft. Zumwalt North (376), Francis Howell Central (381), Ft. Zumwalt South (382), Ft. Zumwalt West (382), Francis Howell North (387) and Ft. Zumwalt East (407).

Advancing to the sectional tournament for Washington were Colbey Schuster, Mark Stahlhuth and Brad Carpenter.

“Brad, Mark and Colbey are happy to advance. The team missed qualifying by five strokes,” said Washington Coach Tim Buschmann. “It definitely was the hardest course we’ve played all year. Length of the course was not a factor. It was position golf. The hard, tabletop greens put a premium on the short game and putting. The ball was played down with the embedded rule in play. It was the first tournament we’ve played the ball down.”

As it turned out, individual scores of 90 and better were good enough to move on.

The Blue Jays were led on the par-72 course by Schuster, who finished in third place overall with an 18-hole round of nine-over-par 81.

“Colbey showed his veteran leadership. He was the clubhouse leader for a long time,” Buschmann said. “His game was steady. He never got in trouble. There were no really bad holes.”

Stahlhuth tied for sixth-place honors with a score of 11-over-par 83.

“Mark had played the course before. His teacher is the teaching pro there, so that gave him somewhat of an advantage knowing the course,” Buschmann said. “His short game was not on. That’s usually the strong part of his game. That tells you how tough conditions were.”

Carpenter finished in a tie for 14th place with a 14-over-par round of 86.

“Brad’s first drive was 320 yards over a tree in perfect position. He ended up with a triple bogey, which pretty much sums up his day,” Buschmann said. “He could never get any momentum. His 86 is out of character for him. He did what it took to make the cut.”

Also playing for Washington, but not advancing, were Sebastian Hommes with a score of 94 and Hunter Mahon with a round of 97.

Timberland’s Zachary Cutler had the top overall score with a four-over round of 76.

Holt’s Jacob Spiegel placed second with an eight-over 80.

Schuster, Stahlhuth and Carpenter will play in the Class 4 Sectional 2 Tournament Monday at The Missouri Bluffs Golf Course in St. Charles starting at 8 a.m.

The top 12 individuals not from the two qualifying teams advance to the Class 4 state tournament.

“The boys are excited about playing at Missouri Bluffs. All three of them should do well. The Bluffs plays to their games,” Buschmann said. “There should be some low scores.”
