With Austin Repp leading the way, Pacific’s wrestlers recorded a fifth-place team finish last Friday and Saturday at the Raytown South Tournament.

Mt. Carmel, Kan., won the tournament championship with 725.5 points. Washington was second with 667.5 points.

Warrensburg placed third with 650 points followed by Ft. Osage (527.5), Pacific (504), Smith-Cotton (493), Raytown (491.5), Belton (474.5), Branson (474.5), Raytown South (314.5), Hillcrest (209.5), St. Joe Central (199), Raytown B (161) and Ruskin (98).

“I’m happy with how we wrestled. We had some good wins and a couple of disappointing losses,” said Pacific Head Coach Rob Schimsa. “We’re a young team. I think the guys are coming along pretty well.”

Repp claimed the 170-pound title with a 7-0 record, improving to 17-0 on the season.

All seven of his matches resulted in first-period pins with the longest match lasting 1:32. He pinned Raytown’s Josh Drake in 1:30 in the finals.

“Austin didn’t get out of the first period. He had another dominating performance,” Schimsa said. “He’s healthy and looks great. He just has to keep it rolling.”

Reaching the finals and placing second were Josh Franek and Dalton Voyles.

Franek (120) posted a 4-1 record, improving to 13-3 on the season. He was pinned in 1:47 by Mt. Carmel’s Parker Howell in the finals.

“Josh lost to a Kansas state champion in the finals. He rolled through his matches leading up to the finals,” Schimsa said. “We’re still thinking if Josh would be better off at 113 rather than 120. He’ll be good either way. He’s a small 120 and a big 113.”

Voyles (182) had a 6-1 record to improve to 14-2 on the season.

Voyles lost by major decision, 13-4, to Washington’s Kyle Summers in the finals. Both of his losses this season have been to Summers.

“Ideally, Dalton would be at 170 pounds, but Repp is there,” Schimsa said. “Dalton had another good tournament. Summers is extremely tough and hard to take down. I’m sure we’ll see him again.”

Joe Rind (132) finished third with a 7-1 record, improving to 13-4 overall. He won by injury default over Washington’s Cody Gardner in the third-place match, but pinned Gardner in 5:34 earlier in the tournament.

“Joe had a big win over Gardner in the pool round,” Schimsa said. “In the semifinals, he lost to a tough kid from Smith-Cotton. It was 0-0 at the time he got pinned.”

Pacific’s fourth-place finishers were Matthew Schimsa and Lane Smith.

Schimsa (138) posted a 4-3 record, moving to 6-3 on the season. He lost by decision, 2-1, to Washington’s Josh Luck in the third-place match.

“Matthew is a sophomore who was filling in for an injured Devin Somers,” Schimsa said about his nephew. “I was proud of the tournament he had. He wrestled hard.”

Smith (145) had a 4-3 record, improving 9-8 on the season. He was pinned in 4:32 by Belton’s Caleb Chevalier in the third-place match.

Jarrett Harrison (195) placed sixth with a 4-3 record, improving to 8-7 on the campaign. He lost by decision, 7-2, to Warrensburg’s Jake Gard in the fifth-place match.

“Jarrett had a good tournament,” Schimsa said. “He beat some good kids and was very competitive.”

Garett Maurath (152) ended seventh with a 3-4 record, moving to 5-9 overall. He won by decision, 5-2, over Mt. Carmel’s Brandon Le in the seventh-place match.

Zain Mathena (126) finished eighth with a 3-5 record, moving to 5-10 overall. He lost by injury default to Hillcrest’s James Stokes in the seventh-place match.

James Spencer (160) had a 1-5 record, moving to 2-5 overall. He pinned Raytown’s Dalton Henderson in 2:32 in his final match.

Jamie Myers (220) was 0-5, moving to 4-10 overall.

Competing as non-scorers for the Indians were Rob Colson and Danny Nickelson.

Colson (132) had a 5-3 record, improving to 6-3 overall. He pinned Ft. Osage’s Kyle Larson in the seventh-place match.

Nickelson (145) posted a 4-4 record, moving to 5-4 overall. He pinned Branson’s Austin Nalley in 3:44 in the seventh-place match.

Pacific was open at 106, 113 and 285 pounds.
