Although the Borgia volleyball Knights made some teams sweat Saturday at the Missouri Boys Volleyball Class 3 District hosted by Webster Groves, it didn’t advance beyond that level.
Borgia went 0-4 in the event to finish at 4-20 on the season.
“All in all I am pretty proud of these boys for their hard work which enabled them to compete at a very high level this season,” said Borgia Head Coach John Nieder.
In pool play competition, Borgia:
• Lost to Webster Groves, 25-12, 25-12;
• Lost to Ft. Zumwalt North, 22-25, 25-7, 15-10;
• Lost to Kirkwood, 25-21, 25-16; and
• Lost to University City, 25-23, 25-23.
“We competed well in both the Ft. Zumwalt North and Kirkwood matches but just had too many bad runs,” Nieder said. “That’s kind of been the story for us most of this season, but I guess you could expect that from a first-year varsity program.”
Borgia’s highlights came in the middle two matches. The Knights took the first game from Ft. Zumwalt North, but got down in both the second and third games and couldn’t recover.
Against Kirkwood, Borgia played with the Pioneers for much of the first game before fading late.
And the Knights came up just short against University City in the final match of the day.
Borgia had several highlights through the season. Senior Ryan Maune, who has signed with Hannibal-LaGrange University to continue his volleyball career, was named to multiple all-tournament teams. Senior Alex Severino also earned honors.
Borgia’s other senior at the end of the season was Joe Rhyne.
