Ending the regular season with two wins, the Union soccer Wildcats are ready to go for next week’s Class 2 District 9 Tournament in St. Clair.

Union (15-9), the second seed in the event, got a preview of its semifinal against third-seeded Warrenton Tuesday. Union won that game, 2-1. Union also beat Warrenton earlier this season at the Pacific Tournament.

“I just hope we don’t get off to a slow start on Monday like we did in the pervious week,” Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey said. “Looking forward to an interest third matchup with Warrenton. It should be a physical game with a lot of emotion tied to it.”

The Wildcats also defeated Windsor Wednesday, 3-0, but lost Monday at Fatima, 5-1.

Union 2, Warrenton 1

Playing at Warrenton, Union forged a 2-1 victory over the Warriors.

“It was another tough win for us,” Fennessey said. “Warrenton is not a bad team. At half it was tied and anybody’s game. We made a couple of changes in the lineup that proved to be the difference in the game.”

Emmet Parker moved up to forward while Nathan Saleniuc went to defense.

“That seemed to give the team a spark that we needed,” Fennessey said. “Emmet scored early in the first half on a breakaway pass from Andrei Ciot.”

Nick Schumaker scored in the second half.

“Nick netted the second goal early in the second half which proved to be just enough to win,” Fennessey said. “The bad thing is we have to come right back Monday and play them for a third time. It’s really difficult to beat a team three times in a year, especially when the two previous games were one-goal games.”

Fennessey said Union’s defense played a stronger game against Warrenton than the previous night against Fatima.

Union 3, Windsor 0

In action Wednesday, the Wildcats finished the regular season with a 3-0 home shutout against Windsor.

Union scored twice in the first half and once in the second half. Trey Fink stopped nine Windsor shots to earn the shutout.

“The team looked good on senior night,” Fennessey said. “We started well and played well throughout the first half. TJ Vitt and Alex Ciot were running the wings particularly well. Tylor Brown had a nice game at the stopper position. He did a lot in slowing the attack of the Owls. Trey recorded his seventh shutout of the year, which is not bad for a first-year goalkeeper.”

Ciot scored two goals while Schumaker added one.

Fennessey said Ciot’s first goal came after he went through three defenders and the second one came on a penalty kick.

Schumaker’s goal came on a rebound of Parker’s initial shot.

“Emmet took the shot, and in true Schumaker fashion, Nick was hustling on the play and cleaned up the rebound,” said Fennessey.

Parker and Saleniuc each assisted once.

Fatima 5, Union 1

Hitting the road Monday, the Union soccer Wildcats fell at Fatima, 5-1.

Fatima built up a 3-0 lead in the first half before Union scored its only goal on a header by Emmet Parker. Andrei Ciot assisted on the goal.

“At that point I felt like we were on the way to coming back,” Fennessey said. “Fatima came right back with a fourth goal minutes after we scored. Defensively, as a team, we just needed to be better then we were. I know it is there. It just wasn’t tonight.”
