Lady Jays End Third at District Track

Competing last Saturday at the Class 4 District 5 track and field meet at Camdenton High School, Washington’s girls finished third and the boys placed 11th in the 12-team field.

Rock Bridge won the girls district championship with a team score of 156. Jefferson City finished second with 130. Washington was third with 92.5.

Waynesville placed fourth with 78 points followed by Camdenton (62), Hickman (39), Willard (39), Springfield Central (38), Rolla (36), Lebanon (14), Smith-Cotton (11) and Hillcrest (3).

Jefferson City claimed the boys district crown with 117 points. Rock Bridge placed second with 103.

Camdenton ended third with 73 points followed by Waynesville (68), Hickman (58), Smith-Cotton (49), Rolla (48), Willard (42), Lebanon (33), Springfield Central (26), Washington (19) and Hillcrest (5).

The top four finishers in each event district qualified for the Class 4 Sectional 3 meet Saturday at Ozark High School. Field events start at 11 a.m. Track events begin at noon.

Lady Jays Qualifiers

Kirstie Leslie qualified in four events, winning two of them. She claimed both the pole vault, clearing 11-0, and the long jump at 17-8 1/4. She also finished fourth in the triple jump at 35-11.

“Kirstie had another great district meet,” said Washington Head Coach Mike Olszowka. “Her consistency this season has been her strength.”

MC Landolt qualified in three events, winning one of them. She won the 100-meter dash, breaking her own school record with a time of 12.3. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash in 26.01.

“MC rolled through the field in the 100 again. She’s on a mission,” Olszowka said. “If she had five more meters in the 200, she would have won that also.”

The 400-meter relay team of Lauren Brinkmann, Emily Stricker, Landolt and Leslie finished third in 51.2.

“We put MC first figuring that a 12.5 out of the blocks would put pressure on everyone else to be perfect and catch us. Lauren ran a great backstretch and Emily moved us up and made a good pass to Kirstie, who got the baton in sixth place and against everyone’s anchor, moved us up to third,” Olszowka said. “The team ran great, our best time of the year. We knew we needed Kirstie, but to do that, we had to take Sarah (Brock) out. It’s a heartbreaker to do that to a kid.”

Jenna Haas finished third in the high jump, clearing 5-0.

“Jenna has had two great meets in a row,” Olszowka said. “At this time of the year, every jump is important. The misses actually come into play more than the makes. Jenna has not missed a bar beside the one she went out on for two meets.”

Abby Stricker placed fourth in the high jump at 4-10.

“Abby had to make it though a jump off for the fourth position,” Olszowka said. “The vertical jumps are events where a couple of inches on your approach can make or break a competitor.”

The 3,200-meter relay team of Erica Diener, Ashley Garrard, Hannah Leslie and Josie Plowman ended third in 10:16.

“We knew they had to run their best to get through. We ran a season PR by seven seconds,” Olszowka said. “Josie got us started and moved us into a top three position. Hannah, Erica and Ashley all ran their best times of the year.”

Blue Jays Qualifiers

Travis Elbert finished third in the 1,600-meter run in 4:39.

“Travis didn’t run his best race. At this time of the year, you don’t worry about time, you worry about position and place,” Olszowka said. “Travis got boxed in, which put a lot of pressure on him to slow down so he could get out and then had to work hard to get back in touch with the lead pack.”

Brenden Leslie placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.39.

“Brenden looked really strong in prelims, then came back for a repeat performance in the finals,” Olszowka said. “He ran another PR by three-tenths of a second to move into fourth place.”
