Recording a finals time of 53.94, Borgia junior Michael Matthews made history Saturday in St. Peters.

Matthews became Borgia's first-ever MSHSAA boys swimming state medalist, placing eight in the 100-yard butterfly.

Matthews entered the state meet, which started Friday at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, seeded 20th, but ripped a time of 53.36 to claim a spot in the championship finals Saturday.

The Borgia swimmer was in the middle of the pack at the midway point of the race, but fell to eighth at the final touch.

Matthews was awarded a state medal, scoring 11 team points for the Knights, and now has all-state status in the sport.

Glendale senior Will Brand won the title with a time of 50.77. Saint Louis University High senior Luke Sloan was second at 51.00 while Parkway West's Tommy Christiansen took third at 51.72.

More will be in the Wednesday Missourian.
