Two victories to start the baseball season for Washington added up to a first-place finish in Pool D of the Four Rivers Classic.

The Blue Jays (2-0) registered wins of 11-0 in five innings Friday at Hermann and 6-3 Monday over Rolla at Ronsick Field.

The Pool D winner was scheduled to host the championship bracket Saturday, but Washington does not have access to Ronsick Field on that day.

If Borgia wins its pool, it likely will host Saturday’s championship bracket starting at 9:30 a.m.

“We’ve put ourselves in a spot where we want to be,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “Hopefully we’ll have some good games on Saturday. I hope the weather is a little better.”

Hermann

Leading 2-0, Washington broke open the game against Hermann with eight runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Blue Jays scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings.

“It was a good beginning, but we have a long way to go,” said Bray. “We’ll work on getting better each day.”

Aaron Meyer got the start on the mound for Washington and earned the win. He allowed four hits and issued no walks in four innings of work.

“Aaron came out and threw a good game to start it for us, going four shutout innings,” Bray said.

Will Davis tossed a scoreless fifth inning to end the game.

Washington began the game with a triple and a double to grab a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same through three innings.

The Blue Jays collected 13 hits in the game.

Matt McGilvray, a freshman, led the Blue Jays at the plate with three hits.

Brian Trigg, Mitch Barrow and Meyer each had two hits.

Grant Ruediger tossed three innings for Hermann and took the loss. Garrett Leimkuehler and Ben Held both worked one inning.

Austin Wurtz, Kody Thompson and Leimkuehler each had one hit for the Bearcats.

Rolla

Washington jumped to a 5-0 lead over Rolla with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second and one in the fourth on a cold, snowy day.

With the score 6-1, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Trailing 6-2, Rolla had the tying run at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.

A base hit to right field scored one run to make the score 6-3, but Washington right fielder Brian Trigg threw out the Rolla runner trying to score from second base.

Sam Katzung made the tag at the plate, which ended the game.

“We practice that play and the situation came up,” Bray said. “I don’t blame their third-base coach for sending the runner home. With the conditions the way they were, the throw could have sailed and the tying run could have been on second base. Brian fielded it and threw a strike. It wasn’t really close.”

Camron Shipley pitched the first six innings for Washington to earn the win. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

“I didn’t know what to expect from Camron and he went out there and competed,” Bray said. “He threw hard and threw well to go six strong. The one run they score was unearned. He threw well.”

Ryan Becszlko worked the seventh inning, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk.

Meyer, Katzung and McGilvray (one double) each collected two hits for Washington. Katzung added three RBIs. Meyer had two RBIs. McGilvray scored two runs.

Shipley added one hit and one walk. Trigg was on base three times and scored three runs.

“With Trigg and McGilvray at the top of our lineup, if they get on, Sam should drive in a lot of runs, especially with Brian and Matt’s speed,” Bray said. “There are a couple of spots in our lineup that we still have to figure out. One through five, we’re pretty solid. We just have to get six through nine swinging a little better. Mitch Barrow was 2-3 against Hermann, so we just have to get it going up and down the lineup.”
