Union Teams Seek to Improve in January

Active during the break, the Union wrestling Wildcats are enjoying some time off before going to Branson Jan. 17-18.

Justin Cranmer’s Wildcats have been the school’s most successful winter sports team so far, going 10-4 in dual meets. Union recently went 6-3 in the Hillsboro Tournament, a dual meet event.

Union will wrestle twice in Branson, taking on Branson and Rolla in a tri-meet Friday, Jan. 17, before all three schools participate in the Branson Tournament the next day.

While Union doesn’t have any undefeated regulars, it does have a number of wrestlers who are having considerable success so far.

Senior Dalton Kuenzel (182) leads the way with a 22-1 record. His lone loss came in the Hillsboro Tournament to Pacific’s Austin Repp, the defending Class 3 state champion at 171 pounds.

Senior Joe Lasky (220) won a title at Hillsboro and is 15-1 on the season. He started the year at 285, but dropped into the lower weight class for the Hillsboro Tournament.

Ranked second on the team in wins currently is freshman Dawson Sickmeier (106), who carries a 20-5 record into the new year.

Senior Jake Siddens (160) is 7-1, but has missed several meets, as has senior Nick Ciaccio (126), who is 6-2.

Other Wildcats with winning records include senior Devin Mainard, sophomores Dalton Fennessey and Tyler Pace and freshmen Dylan Ahern, Josh Clark, Kyree Hinkle-Hill and Tommy Resnik.

Girls Basketball

Union Girls Basketball Head Coach Dusty Weiskopf hopes the third time will be the charm Saturday when it attempts to play Northwest in Cedar Hill for third place in the Northwest Tournament. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

That event was hampered multiple times by poor road conditions and Saturday’s event will be the latest attempt to conclude the season.

The Lady ’Cats have every reason to see the tournament completed. That’s because Union would like to start 2014 on a positive note and finish out the tournament with a second victory.

The Lady ’Cats enter 2014 at 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Four Rivers Conference.

It won’t be Union’s first meeting with Northwest. The Lady ’Cats fell 33-32 Dec. 9 in a regular season game in Union.

So far this season, Union has looked to junior Bri Clark for its scoring punch. Clark averages 19.7 points per game. As a team, Union averages 44 points per contest.

Others following Clark in the scoring column include seniors Anna Houston (6.7 points per game), Megan Altemueller (6.0), junior Kayla Kelly (3.1), senior Ali Overstreet (2.8), sophomore Erika Jeffries (2.4), sophomore Cassidy Terrell (1.8) and sophomore Emily Bay (1.8).

Clark leads the team in rebounds per game at 4.4. Overstreet is next at 3.0 with Houston following at 2.9.

Overstreet leads the team with two assists per game. Kelly averages 1.3 and Altemueller averages one per game.

In the steals department, Altemueller leads the way at 1.9 per game while Overstreet and Houston have 1.6 apiece.

Union will continue its schedule Monday in New Haven, taking on the Lady Shamrocks in FRC action starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.

Boys Basketball

The Wildcats of Chris Simmons are looking to improve on their 2-5 overall and 0-2 record from the 2013 portion of the season.

Union hosts Festus Tuesday to start 2014. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m.

Rolla comes to Union next Friday with the same schedule for that event.

Union’s two wins so far have been against O’Fallon Christian and Bourbon.

So far, Union’s most consistent players have been junior Nick Ziegler and senior Brian Borgmann.

The two have combined to score 55 percent of Union’s points. Ziegler averages 19.7 points per contest while Borgmann is next at 8.9.

The two have combined for 41 percent of Union’s rebounds as well. Borgmann leads the way with 6.1 boards per game while Ziegler is next at 5.3.

Ziegler is the team’s assists leader with 2.9 per game and Borgmann leads the team with three blocked shots per contest.

Beyond Ziegler and Borgmann, Union has gotten contributions from an number of players.

Junior Kevin Curran is third on the team in scoring at 5.3 points per game and junior Tanner Bunch averages 5.1 points per game.

Junior Andrei Ciot is next at 3.7 points per game. Sophomore Dillon Breeden averages 3.4 points per game.

Ciot is third on the team at 4.7 rebounds per contest. Breeden follows at 3.1 while Curran averages 2.6.

Curran is second in assists at two per game. Ciot averages 1.3 and Breeden is fourth at 1.1.

Ciot leads the team in steals per game at 1.6 and is the only Wildcat to average better than one per contest.
