For the second time in its own tournament, the Washington Post 218 Senior Legion team defeated Manchester.

Sunday’s semifinal game ended with a 11-1 Washington victory.

Post 218 (17-3) advanced to the championship game against Jefferson City Post 5. However, that contest was washed out by storms which rolled through Washington Sunday evening. It will not be rescheduled, according to Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner.

“The weather cooperated all the way up to the finals,” Gardner said. “Unfortunately we will not be able to make it up. I know that both teams were really looking forward to playing each other. Maybe we will meet Jefferson City in the finals of the Blue Springs Tournament.”

Jefferson City defeated Jackson in the other semifinal, 9-6, to improve to 20-0 on the season.

Washington had beaten Manchester 8-0 Wednesday to start the tournament. And Post 218 got off to a hot start again Sunday.

Washington scored three times in the first and twice in the second.

Manchester chipped back with a run in the third. That’s how the score stayed until Post 218 scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tyler Tuepker got the start for Post 218 and stayed perfect by moving to 5-0 on the season. He’s got a 0.62 ERA so far this season.

“Our team’s confidence goes up a notch or two when Tyler Tuepker takes the mound and he did not disappoint going the distance once again,” Gardner said.

Tuepker went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and no walks. He struck out six Manchester batters.

Offensively, Leimkuehler was the only Washington batter with multiple hits and he rapped out three. Leimkuehler doubled, scored once, drove in two runs, was hit by a pitch and stole two bases.

Ben Huffman also hit a double. He scored twice and walked.

Grant Eckelkamp, Dilan Bollmann, Matt Jones, Noah Borgerding, Luke Hasenjaeger, Sam Katzung and Jack Kopmann each had one single.

Eckelkamp scored twice and was hit by a pitch.

Bollmann scored twice, drove in two, posted a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch.

Jones and Borgerding each drove in one run.

Hasenjaeger scored, drove in a run and was hit by a pitch.

Katzung scored while Kopmann scored once and drove in a run. Todd Kleekamp scored once as a courtesy runner.

“We were also able to get production from everyone in the lineup. Our defense was again outstanding with Ben Huffman making a diving catch in the first inning with two outs and a runner on first,” Gardner said. “We are really stepping up our game as the tournament goes on and our focus and intensity is there on every pitch.”
