Getting a shared shutout from Justin Schuler and Matt Jones, the Washington Post 218 Senior Legion team rolled past Elsberry in the Ninth District Tournament championship semifinals Friday, 5-0.

Schuler tossed eight innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

“Justin Schuler was just fantastic on the mound for us,” said Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner. “He was sharp the entire game and really was never in trouble. It was probably his best performance of the year and the kind of outing we expect out of him.”

Jones threw the last inning, allowing one hit while striking out one batter.

Offensively, Post 218 (32-6) managed 13 hits, but could only produce five runs from those hits.

Tony Helfrich recorded Washington’s biggest hit, a home run. He ended with two hits, one run and one RBI in the game.

“Tony Helfrich really hit the ball well all night and had a home run to left that really never was more than 20 feet off the ground,” Gardner said. “We really played a solid game.”

Three Post 218 batters doubled in the contest.

Grant Eckelkamp went 4-5 with a double and one run.

Trent Leimkuehler had two hits, including a double, with a run and an RBI. He added two stolen bases.

Noah Borgerding posted a double for his only hit. He drove in two.

Dilan Bollmann came through with two hits, one run and one RBI. He also sacrificed and stole a base.

Jones added a single while Jack Kopmann singled and scored.

Brennan Hurley came through with two of Elsberry’s four hits.

Brad Jordan doubled for the only extra-base hit.

Dale Diederich started for Post 226 and took the loss. He went six innings while allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Hurley pitched 1.2 innings allowing one run on four hits. He struck out one.

Jay Ogden closed out the game, getting the final out on a strikeout.
