Less than a week before the start of fall sports practices, Borgia is looking to fill two key positions.
Kurt Russell, athletic director and cross country head coach, has accepted a teaching position at Visitation Academy.
“I’m happy to return to teaching,” Russell said. “That’s where I do my best work and it will be nice to get back to that.”
Russell has been Borgia’s athletic director since the 2009-10 school year and has been at Borgia for the past 13 years. Prior to becoming athletic director, Russell coached Borgia’s cross country and track teams. He gave up his track duties in recent years, but has stayed as the school’s cross country head coach.
Russell indicated a search will be held to find his successor as athletic director and dean of students.
“The cross country situation is up in the air,” Russell said. “I will make sure the cross country team has a quality coach and make sure the next coach has help. The program will be fine.”
Russell, who also has been a teacher and coach at New Haven and Washington, said the situation came up within the last couple of days.
“It’s hard to leave Borgia,” Russell said. “This is a great place.”
