Controlling its own destiny in MSHSAAA Class 3 state volleyball pool play, the Borgia Lady Knights finished with a sweep of Lutheran South, 25-14, 25-21.

Borgia finished pool play at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau with a 5-1 record in sets, bets among Class 3 schools.

Borgia Head Coach Brad Bruns said Borgia had to wake up after dropping its first set to Carl Junction.

“There were three other very successful teams there,” Bruns said. “Unfortunately, you can’t have a bad day at state because it will affect you the next day. To play that many good teams in one tournament, I’m just proud of the girls for the way they didn’t let one loss beat them. They fought back and got what they wanted. They deserved it.”

Carl Junction finished out with a 4-2 record while St. Pius X of Kansas City finished at 2-4 and Lutheran South went 1-5. Bruns was able to get every player on the roster into the match, which was another positive.

“There’s a reason we have 14 players on the team,” Bruns said. “All 14 players are crucial, whether they’re in the game or not in the game. We all have our roles. It was so amazing to see the kids on the court and their reactions when we got a point. It was even more amazing to watch the kids who weren’t in the game and their reactions when we got a point. Everyone, all 14 girls, four managers and five coaches, was into that game and was excited. Everyone worked their tails off so this team would be successful. As a coach, I’m extremely proud and so blessed to be a part of the Borgia family.”
