Washington’s Post 218 Senior Legion team earned one win at the Festus Tournament over the weekend.

Washington topped Festus, 3-1, on Saturday at West City Park.

Post 218 dropped games to Gonzales, Fairview Heights and to the Mid-Illinois Bears at the event.

The tourney ended for Washington with a tough 16-2 loss to Gonzales at Jefferson College on Sunday. Fairview Heights used one big inning to knock off Post 218, 6-2, on Saturday, while the Mid-Illinois Bears edged Post 218 on Friday, 2-0.

Washington is hosting a tourney this week, beginning Wednesday. See related story for more details.

Festus

Justin Schuler went all seven innings on the hill for Post 218. Schuler allowed four hits, one earned run and two walks. He struck out 10 in the victory.

Chris Bethel had the lone RBI of the game for Post 218. The team had four hits — one apiece by Seth Bollmann, Ross Seitter, Sam Katzung and Noah Borgerding. Austin Finder, Tanner Meyer and Borgerding scored the runs.

Both teams scored once in the first inning, Washington’s run coming as Finder stole home. Washington scored twice in the fourth. Bethel’s ground out scored Borgerding. Meyer later scored on an error.

Gonzales

Gonzales got the bats going in a big way, scoring seven runs in the second and four runs in the third. A five-run fifth inning put the finishing touches on the game. Washington managed one run in the fourth and one in the fifth. Post 218 had five hits. Aaron Meyer and Finder both recorded two hits apiece, while Bollmann added one. Spencer Juergens and Katzung had one RBI apiece.

Ryan Becszlko, Chris Bethel and Nick Thiel handled the pitching duties for Post 218. Thiel took the loss, but he didn’t allow an earned run.

Fairview Heights

Fairview Heights of Illinois had a 1-0 lead when they scored four runs in the third inning to pull away for good. Washington cut into the lead with two late runs, but it was not enough.

Borgerding and Tanner Meyer had the RBIs. Seitter had two hits, while Katzung, Aaron Meyer and Borgerding had one hit apiece.

Mitch Hammack went four innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out one. Bethel pitched two innings and allowed just one hit.

Mid-Illinois

A stellar pitching performance from Evan Ayers was wasted, as Washington couldn’t get the bats going in a 2-0 loss to the Bears. Post 218 had just two hits in the game.

Ayers went all seven innings and allowed just five hits, two runs (both earned) and three walks. He struck out four.

Both of Washington’s hits came from Katzung. Seitter, Finder and Logan Holdmeyer all drew walks.

Mid-Illinois scored both of its runs in the second innings, using three singles.
