Finally beginning the season, the Borgia basketball Lady Knights fell Saturday at home to Cor Jesu Academy, 53-45.

“It was a tough game to start the new season,” Borgia Head Coach Stacia Parsell said. “But there were a lot of things to be encouraged about.”

Borgia stays at home to host Villa Duchesne Tuesday with junior varsity action beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Knights hit the road to visit Bishop DuBourg Friday in their Archdiocesan Athletic Association opener. Freshman action begins at 4 p.m.

Cor Jesu led the game after one quarter, 11-6, and held a 24-19 lead at the intermission.

The Chargers maintained that advantage through three quarters, 36-31.

Cor Jesu added to the lead with a 17-14 fourth quarter.

“The turnovers (16) and poor free-throw shooting (8-17) kept us from winning the game,” Parsell said. “But these are things we can correct.”

Cor Jesu went 17-25 from the free-throw line to secure its victory.

Senior Katie Lindemann led all scorers in the game with 19 points. She also had nine defensive rebounds.

Parsell said there still is room for improvement.

Junior Janie Arand also reached double digits, scoring 12 points with five rebounds and four assists.

“Janie Arand did an outstanding job defensively,” Parsell said. “That was a very positive sign.”

Junior Emily Grahl scored six points with eight assists, three rebounds and two steals.

“Emily Grahl played a good game and showed that she has improved her game on all levels,” Parsell said. “We also got positive contributions from Madison Wehking, Baylee Godat and Morgan Spradling.”

Wehking scored five points with one rebound. Godat ended with two points, two assists and a steal. Spradling ended with one point and four rebounds.

Also playing were Molly Arand, Cassandra Halsted and Alexis Sine.

Charley Poth scored 14 points to lead Cor Jesu while Laura Milles ended with 10, Natalie Chrisco added nine and Emily Schueppert closed out with eight points.
