Stopped one round short of the state tournament, the Borgia girls golf team completed its season Monday in Class 1 sectional action at Eldon Country Club.

Three Borgia girls qualified for the sectional event from last week’s Class 1 District 2 Tournament at Dogwood Hill Golf Resort in Osage Beach.

Katie Eime led Borgia with an eighth-place finish at 102.

Holly Swartz closed with a round of 112, good for a 16th-place tie.

And Rachel Brinker shot 114 to place 20th.

The top 20 golfers along with the top three schools qualified for the sectional meet.

“It was an outstanding team performance,” said Borgia Coach Chip Thompson. “We had a five stroke improvement over last year’s seventh-place performance of 455. The team consisted of four players new to postseason tourney play.”

In the team standings, Borgia shot 450 to place fifth, two strokes behind St. Dominic. Osage won the meet with a round of 409 and was followed by California at 424 and Russellville at 426.

Following Borgia were Southern Boone, Barat, New Bloomfield and Eugene.

Borgia’s other golfers were Elizabeth King, who shot 122 and placed 30th, and Haleigh Forget, who shot 149 and placed 43rd.

“Experience is an important factor for success in golf and especially tourney play,” Thompson said. “Today we entered play with a lot less experience. It was their practice and play since spring and summer that proved beneficial. It was also their positive character, especially their grace, perseverance and determination that showed today.”

Thompson said it was a tough course.

“The course played difficult, especially the greens,” said Thompson. “They were small and fast. It was easy to get in trouble if you lost concentration around Dogwood Hills. And of course, frustration is just part of the game.”

Thompson said that he is proud of all of the team members, who have learned quite a bit this season.

“They will take all the positives from today and from the season and they will build,” Thompson said.

In the sectional meet, Eime shot 115 to place 39th while Brinker was 44th with a score of 121 and Swartz shot 122 to end 46th.
