Knightmare on Borgia Drive: St. Charles West Dominates

In the past, the annual games between Borgia and St. Charles West generally have been close.

Thursday’s meeting was an exception to that rule as the visiting Warriors (14-6) dominated Borgia (13-5) in every facet of play while rolling to a 59-41 victory.

“We just came out and didn’t play very good,” Borgia Head Coach Dave Neier said. “When you miss that many layups and free throws, it’s going to be tough to be in the ballgame. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to become a better ball team. We’ve got a lot more talent than we’re showing.”

Borgia returned to action Friday at St. Mary’s in Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division action. Borgia entered that game at 3-1 in the conference.

“The best thing is that we get to play right away again tomorrow night,” Neier said. “Hopefully we can put this game behind us and go out and play some good basketball.”

The Knights return home Tuesday to host St. Dominic in AAA Large Division play. The tripleheader starts with freshman action at 4 p.m.

And it could have been worse for the Knights. Borgia struggled the entire evening, shooting just 38 percent from the field and 57 percent from the free-throw line.

Borgia sank just two of 14 three-point shots in the game.

“We’re not running our offense very good right now,” Neier said. “We forgot our assignments sometimes on defense and they ended up getting an easy shot or shot they wanted and one we should have been taking away. We’ve got to get more focused and come out and play hard.”

Meanwhile, St. Charles West did pretty much what it wanted in the game. The Warriors played a confident style, which didn’t change even when Borgia cut the lead to four points heading into the fourth quarter.

St. Charles West jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and led 12-5 following eight minutes of action.

The Warriors were up 26-16 at the intermission and led by nine for much of the third quarter before Borgia rallied to cut it to 35-31 at the end of the third quarter.

“We just couldn’t seem to put things together,” Neier said. “We would come back a little bit and, all of a sudden, we would lose focus again. We would have three or four trips without getting a good shot and the lead would be right back up there again.”

St. Charles West responded with a three-point basket by sophomore Davis Soderberg, one of his four three-point baskets on the night.

Soderberg led the Warriors with 18 points in the game and added four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Junior Logan Gonce then scored and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but the Warriors had set the tone for the final eight minutes of action.

Gonce scored 13 points with seven assists, three rebounds and three steals.

“They had two exceptional players in Gonce and Soderberg,” Neier said. “Gonce controls the tempo of the game with the way he handles the ball. Soderberg is pretty deadly outside and we gave him too many easy shots.”

After Borgia sophomore Walton Eckelkamp hit a three-point shot, the Warriors picked up a conventional three-point play from senior Troy Wehde, who scored, was fouled, and hit the free throw. The extra point made it 43-34 with 6:02 to play.

Wehde ended the game with seven points, five rebounds and two assists.

From there, the Warriors continued to pull away.

Borgia had few highlights in the game. Neier tried more combinations than a safecracker in trying to find anything which would work. Nothing did for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

“We’ve got some work to do,” Neier said. “The biggest thing is that we need to play with some enthusiasm. There wasn’t much talk on defense tonight. We got out there and were pretty lethargic. They took it to us.”

Senior Zac Schweissguth led the Knights in scoring with 12 points, hitting all four of his shots from the field and going 4-6 from the free-throw line.

Schweissguth also had four rebounds and three assists.

Senior Adam Meyer scored nine points with five rebounds and one assist.

Eckelkamp scored seven points while adding two rebounds and one assist.

Senior Joe Helfrich was limited to five points while adding six rebounds and a blocked shot.

Junior Clayton Voss added four points.

Senior Tyler Breckenkamp hit a three-point shot for his points.

And sophomore Luke DeLine scored one point with two rebounds.

Others playing were senior Kevin Birk (three assists, two rebounds one steal), juniors Spencer Juergens (one rebound, one assist) and Jacob Neier (one steal) and sophomore Trey Hunter (one rebound).

Also for St. Charles West junior Drew Lauer scored nine points, three steals, one assist and one rebound.

Senior Robert Bearden scored six points with nine rebounds and one blocked shot.

Senior Ryan Finders scored six points with three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

And sophomore Hasaan DeCarolis added one rebound.
