Borgia Beats Sullivan to Win Peoples Bank Classic

Jumping on top early and sealing the victory at the free-throw line, the Borgia basketball Lady Knights knocked off the Sullivan Lady Eagles Friday night to win the Second Annual Peoples Bank Holiday Classic, 48-31.

The Lady Knights (4-1) scored seven quick points near the end of the first quarter to get the edge on Sullivan (5-1) after eight minutes, 11-4. 

Borgia continued to build its lead, holding a 19-11 edge at the half. Borgia led 30-18 after three quarters.

The Lady Knights led by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter before Sullivan ended the game on a 4-1 run.

The Lady Knights placed two players on the all-tournament team with senior Janie Arand on the first team and sophomore Megan Jensen on the second team.

Sullivan placed seniors Taylor and Aley Lucas on the all-tournament team.

Arand netted 13 points for Borgia with seven rebounds and four steals.

Also scoring 13 points was sophomore Kaylee Heggemann, who came off the bench. She also had four steals two rebounds and one assist.

Jensen scored 11 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and adding two steals and a blocked shot.

Senior Emily Grahl and junior Molly Arand scored five points apiece. Junior Cassandra Halsted had one point.

Borgia went 19-29 from the free-throw line, sealing the victory at the charity stripe. Sullivan hit three of nine attempts for the game.

Senior Sierra Pryor led Sullivan with 10 points while adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Taylor Lucas had six points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Senior Tessa Johanning scored six points on a pair of three-point baskets. She also had four rebounds and one assist.

Aley Lucas scored five points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior Megan Brandt netted four points.

Sullivan outrebounded Borgia in the game, 38-26.

Led by tournament MVP sophomore Hailey Diestelkamp, Owensville won the third-place game over Waynesville, 63-46. Diestelkamp scored 19 points with 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the tournament. She also had seven steals, five assists and two blocked shots.

Miranda Robertson scored 14 for the Dutchgirls.

Sophomore Kallie Bildner, an all-tournament pick, had 17 points, 12 rebounds and four steals to lead Waynesville. Hannah Bland also ended with 17 points for the Lady Tigers.

Washington won the consolation game over Cuba, 67-52. Five Lady Jays, Paige Carpenter (17), Courtney Kedroski (17), Megan Bauche (11), Kyra Hardesty (10) and Rachel Kackley (10) each hit double digits in scoring. Kackley also had 10 rebounds. Hardesty added seven assists and Kedroski had five.

Hannah Mitchell led the Lady Wildcats with 21 points. Shelby Whitaker ended with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Pattonville got 25 points from Alexis Brown and 18 from Nikki Callahan to defeat Farmington in the seventh-place game, 48-35. Shania Sweeney (11 points, eight rebounds) and Kaitlyn Gilliam (nine points, 11 rebounds) led Farmington in the game.
