MC Landolt showed her toughness and dedication during the last three weeks of the spring track and field season.

Landolt, who recently completed her junior year at Washington High School, suffered an injury to her left foot during the week between the district and sectional meets.

“I hurt my foot during practice doing some sprint drills,” Landolt said. “I wasn’t really sure what it was. It took me about a week to find out that it was a stress reaction, which is one step below a stress fracture.”

While a foot injury to a sprinter seems to be a big problem, Landolt wasn’t about to let it stand in the way of her goal of reaching the medal stand at the Class 4 state track meet.

It wasn’t an easy road to state for Landolt.

“The sectional meet was really tough. I was running with a lot of pain. I couldn’t even warm up because of the pain,” she said. “The pain definitely got a lot more tolerable (at the state meet). It’s gone down a lot. It’s almost miraculous how it cleared up a little. It’s still not pain free, but it’s good enough where I can tolerate it a lot better.”

Despite feeling the pain at sectionals, Landolt still qualified for the state meet in three events, and won the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter relay. She also advanced in the 200-meter dash, finishing third.

During the state championships at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Landolt earned all-state honors in the 100-meter dash, finishing sixth in the finals in a time of 12.55. She qualified for the finals with the fifth-best time of 12.68 in the preliminaries.

“I was really excited just to make it into the finals because I’ve worked so hard to get to this point,” Landolt said. “I dedicated myself to track this year and I’ve made so many sacrifices for track. I’m excited that all of my hard work paid off.”

Six of the eight sprinters in the 100-meter dash finals were seniors. The other two were juniors, Landolt and Hazelwood Central’s Ashley Henderson, who won the race in 11.95.

“I knew it was going to be really tough, especially with my injury. I wasn’t sure if I’d even be at this meet at all,” Landolt said. “I was ready for the competition. I knew who I was up against. I’ve raced against several of these girls in St. Louis this year. I knew who they were and I was ready.”

Landolt’s best time in the 100-dash is 12.3, which is the school record.

“You have to have talent, but most of it is just hard work and dedication,” Landolt said. “I’ve done a lot of strength drills, a lot of pushups, sit-ups and wall sits. I’ve done a lot of starting block work, a lot of speed work, like running 150s, 200s and 250s in practice. And running 400s to up your endurance for the 200. There’s a lot of repetition of different sprints.”

In the 200-meter dash at state, Landolt placed 15th in the preliminaries in a time of 26.37.

Landolt ran the opening leg on the 400-meter relay team that finished 11th at the state meet in a time of 50.52. Lauren Brinkmann, Emily Stricker and Kirstie Leslie also were on the team.

Washington track and field coach Mike Olszowka praised Landolt’s performance.

“MC has had the goal of becoming the fastest girl in the county, and then in the St. Louis area, and then in the state. For her to finish in sixth place in the 100-meter dash in Class 4, it’s an amazing accomplishment,” Olszowka said. “She’s really into track. There’s an event for everyone and she found her event in the 100-meter dash. She’s also very strong in the 200.”

It was the second career appearance at the state meet for Landolt, who finished 12th in the 100-meter dash last year as a sophomore.

Landolt, also a standout softball player at Washington, will compete in track this summer.

She already participated in the Festival of Miles at Saint Louis University High School and the Great Southwest Classic at the University of New Mexico.

Landolt has high hopes for her senior year.

“This year, before the school year started, I made a list of six goals I wanted to accomplish. Being all-state in the 100 was my main goal. It was on the top of my list,” Landolt said. “Next year, I’m definitely going for a top three finish at state in the 100 and all-state in the 200.”
