Washington and Ft. Zumwalt South split a pair of GAC Central baseball games Wednesday and Thursday with the road team winning both times.

Ft. Zumwalt South (9-9, 2-3) won Wednesday at Ronsick Field, 7-5.

Washington (10-6, 2-4) came back to win Thursday at Zumwalt South, 8-5.

“The difference between the two games was our hitting came on in the second game,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “Our players are starting to believe that we can play with anyone.”

Thursday Game

The Blue Jays jumped to a 5-0 lead after three innings and led 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before allowing four runs.

Jared Walde got the start on the mound and earned the win. He pitched into the seventh inning before being lifted. In 6.1 innings, he allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Aaron Meyer got the last two outs to register the save, allowing two hits.

The big inning for the Blue Jays was the third, where they scored four runs.

“We hit the ball very well, collecting 11 hits,” Bray said. “We received a good pitching performance from Jared. Aaron came in and retired the last two hitters to close the game out.”

It was a balanced offensive attack as Luke Hasenjaeger, Dilan Bollmann, Phillip Straatmann, Kyle Summers and Walde each collected two hits.

Bollmann also drew two walks and had one RBI and one run. Hasenjaeger scored two runs. Summers and Walde both had one RBI.

Todd Hellmann finished with one hit, two walks and three runs.

Brock Hopkins walked and scored. Brian Trigg scored a run. Andrew Sumner had one RBI.

Justin Laffleur was the Bulldogs’ starting pitcher and suffered the loss, working 3.2 innings.

Justin Hugge, Ryan Sosnowski and Sam Oates each had two hits.

Wednesday Game

Ft. Zumwalt South took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the third inning, only to have Washington respond with five runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 5-4 advantage.

The Bulldogs scored single runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the win.

“They had some bloops and bleeders that found holes at crucial times of the game. We had three line outs at crucial times of the game,” Bray said. “We struck out only three times. When we put the bat on the ball, they threw it around a bit.”

Hasenjaeger got the start on the mound for the Blue Jays and took the loss. In four innings, he allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Zach Pointer allowed two runs, one earned, in two innings in relief. He allowed four hits, no walks and struck out two.

Hopkins worked one inning scoreless frame on the mound, striking out one while allowing one hit and one walk.

Jeremy Remick pitched all seven innings for Ft. Zumwalt South. He allowed five runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Pete Coulter, Justin Schuler, Walde and Hasenjaeger each had one hit for Washington. Coulter and Walde both scored a run.

Hopkins collected two walks, one RBI and one run. Bollmann and Trigg both scored a run.

“Our players did a good job of running the bases and taking advantage of their miscues,” Bray said. “Only having four hits really is what did us in.”

Tyler Muehling had three hits and two RBIs to lead Ft. Zumwalt South at the plate.
