Drake Raftery’s 23-yard touchdown reception with 1:40 to play proved to be the difference Friday night for Borgia.
The Knights (2-2, 1-1) rallied for a 30-27 win at St. Mary’s (1-3, 0-1) in Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division action.
Raftery went up for the pass from Justin Baylard and ripped it away from a St. Mary’s defender for the touchdown.
Jake Erwin’s extra-point kick gave the Knights a three-point edge, which they held for the rest of the contest.
The game was a back-and-forth affair between two teams seeking their first AAA victory of the season.
Borgia struck first. Erwin booted a 42-yard field goal at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter. Kelan Winters then ran 80 yards for another score with 58 seconds to play in the quarter. Erwin’s kick made it 10-0.
But the Dragons came back. Will Pratt scored on a five-yard run with Jake DeWeese kicking the extra point. Cody Beile scored on a 10-yard run with 5:58 to play in the quarter to put the host team on top, 13-10.
Borgia went up before the half. Baylard hit Tyler Breckenkamp with a 34-yard touchdown pass to make it 16-13 with 1:42 left in the half.
In the third quarter, the Dragons got a 10-yard run from Beile with 3:07 left in the period. That gave St. Mary’s a 19-16 advantage.
Borgia went on top with 7:31 left in the game on a one-yard run by Baylard and extra point by Erwin, 23-19.
The Dragons got a 65-yard pass from Beile to Carl Crimi and a two-point run by Beile to make it 27-23 with 6:20 to play.
And that’s how it held until Borgia got the final touchdown.
The Knights are back home next week hosting St. Dominic.
