Washington snapped a four-game girls soccer losing streak with a pair of home victories.

The Lady Jays (9-4-1, 2-2) won Friday over Sullivan 3-1 and Monday over Holt in a penalty kick shootout, 1-0.

Sullivan

Washington jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first half and held on for a 3-1 win over Sullivan.

All four goals in the game were scored in the first half.

“We played pretty well. We had two minutes that hurt us that led to two of their goals,” said Sullivan Head Coach Bill Kackley. “We also missed a good opportunity early in the game where we had three shots on goal, especially the header by Skylar Evans that hit the crossbar.”

Halee Nurnberger, Salena Pottebaum and Liz Brinkmann scored goals for Washington.

Brianna Pagan and Stacie Smith both had one assist.

The Lady Jays got on the scoreboard when Nurnberger knocked a head ball in on a corner kick from Pagan.

“I believe this was our fifth goal so far this season that we’ve scored in that manner,” said Washington Head Coach Chris Lanemann.

Pottebaum then scored on a penalty kick to make the score 2-0.

“Salena created the penalty kick with a good run into the 18-yard box,” Lanemann said. “She then calmly scored the penalty shot.”

Washington made the score 3-0 when Brinkmann scored on an assist from Smith.

“Liz scored a very nice goal on an excellent pass from Stacie,” Lanemann said. “Stacie sent Liz in on a breakaway and Liz slid a wonderful goal in around the goalie.”

The Lady Eagles (9-3) made the score 3-1 on a goal by Aley Lucas.

Anna Kelpe played all 80 minutes in goal for Washington, registering three saves.

Sullivan goalie Kelsey Hedges also made three saves in 80 minutes.

“Skylar Evans did some excellent things that I haven’t seen out of her before. Kelsey Hedges and our fullbacks played solid. Kelsey Hamblin did an excellent job containing Washington’s speed,” Kackley said. “The keys of our overall record is that we play together as a team and keep improving on our ball and passing skills. We have some individuals who stand out for us, but they are successful because we work as a team.”

Holt

Washington returned to GAC Central action Monday with the win over Holt (6-8, 1-2).

“The girls played very well. The only thing we could have done better was finish our chances,” Lanemann said. “We outshot Holt 10-3, and had several dangerous chances.”

The game was scoreless after 80 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions.

The penalty kick shootout went to sudden death when Washington’s Savannah Thibault scored the game-winner.

Mary McGilvray played the entire game in goal for the Lady Jays.

“Mary played extremely well in the penalty kick shootout. She came up with two big saves,” Lanemann said. “All across the field, we played well. We controlled possession by a wide margin. It was a good game for us.”
