It was a double dose of bad news for Pacific during its football contest last Friday at Potosi.

The Indians (1-1) not only lost the game to the Trojans 28-26, but starting quarterback Eain Roberts was carried off the field in the second quarter with a knee injury after scoring on a nine-yard touchdown run where he was hit in the end zone by a defender.

“We’re waiting for an MRI on Wednesday and we’ll know more at that point,” said Pacific Head Coach George Hinkle. “He got hit low by one kid and high by another. The guy who hit him on top was going at full speed, even though Eain was three yards past the goal line. That’s football. It’s a rough game.”

Lucas Zurliene, a sophomore, took over at quarterback for Pacific.

“Lucas did pretty well. He threw the ball and ran the ball. He did some nice things,” Hinkle said. “He brings a different dimension to our offense. We won’t change much with Lucas at quarterback.”

The Indians were not able to pull off the victory.

“Overall, I thought we played pretty well. We made some mistakes that we need to work on,” Hinkle said. “There are fundamental things to correct, like missed tackles on defense and execution on offense.”

Pacific accumulated 289 yards of total offense, 161 passing and 128 rushing.

Roberts was 2-5 passing for 58 yards and one touchdown and also carried the ball six times for 64 yards and one touchdown before his injury.

Zurliene was 7-14 passing for 70 yards. He rushed for 47 yards on seven attempts and scored a touchdown.

Tanner Brown and Caleb Moman both carried the ball nine times for 25 yards. Brown rushed for one touchdown.

Chris Klenke led the Indians’ receivers with three receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown.

Duane Singleton (12 yards) and Josh Vondriska (eight yards) both added two catches.

Lane Smith had one catch for 15 yards. Jason Koepke had one reception for 11 yards.

Defensively, Dustin Cowsert registered five solo tackles and one assist for the Indians.

Logan Wells added four solos and three assists. Klenke registered four solos and one assist. Scott Roberts finished with four solos. Shane Henderson collected three solos and three assists. Jeff Hinkle and Ashton Moore both had three solos and two assists.

Game Summary

Pacific grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Roberts to Klenke.

The Trojans (1-1) responded with 21 straight points to take a 21-7 advantage.

Roberts was then injured when he scored on a nine-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-14.

The score remained 21-14 at halftime.

Pacific’s Brown then scored on a one-yard touchdown run, but the extra point was blocked and Potosi maintained a 21-20 lead.

Trailing 28-20, the Indians scored on a touchdown run by Zurliene. The two-point conversion failed, making the score 28-26.

St. Clair Preview

Pacific hosts St. Clair (1-1) Friday at 7 p.m. in the Four Rivers Conference opener for both teams.

“St. Clair is a team with good athletes, good size and is physical on both sides of the ball,” Hinkle said. “They have a solid defense and run different formations on offense.”

Hinkle said the Indians will need to slow down Bulldogs running back Skyler Hutchison to have a chance.

“He’s a tough, hard-nosed player who runs the ball hard,” Hinkle said of Hutchison. “Our defense has to rally to the ball and get him on the ground.”

Both the Indians and the Bulldogs have beaten De Soto to account for their one win.

St. Clair opened the season with a home loss to Washington, 24-15, and won last week at home over De Soto, 32-22.

Pacific won at home over De Soto in its opening game, 28-21.
