The state’s best Freshman American Legion teams are coming to Washington.
And the eight-team state event starts Wednesday at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field. The first game will be 10 a.m. Wednesday and the championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. The if-needed game is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.
Of importance to Washington fans is the home team’s first game. Post 218 will open the tournament Wednesday against Eureka Post 177. That game starts at 7 p.m.
“I think this team can make a deep run at the state tournament as long as we play the type of ball we have all season,” Post 218 Manager Scott Forrester said.
All first-round games will take place Wednesday, July 16. There are eight teams in the tournament.
Creve Coeur Post 397 will open the tournament against St. Robert Post 331 at 10 a.m.
The second game has St. Charles Post 312 taking on Ste. Genevieve Post 150 at 1 p.m.
Following will be Jackson Post 158 playing the Springfield Glendale Merchants at 4 p.m.
And the Washington game caps the first day of action.
Games start again Thursday, July 17, at 10 a.m. with losers’ bracket games. The Game 1 loser plays the Game 3 loser at 10 a.m. with the Game 2 loser meeting the Game 4 loser at 1 p.m.
Semifinals start at 4 p.m. with the winners of the first two games playing each other.
The second semifinal starts at 7 p.m.
Friday’s games will whittle the field down to three teams. The big matchup of the day is the winners’ bracket final at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, July 19, the losers’ bracket final is set for 10 a.m.
The championship follows at 1 p.m.
Should a second championship game be necessary, it will take place Sunday, July 20, at 10 a.m.
As there are no regional tournaments at the Freshman Legion level, this event marks the pinnacle of achievement at that age group.
