It ended the way it started.
The Borgia soccer Lady Knights closed out the regular season Wednesday by going to penalty kicks on the road.
But unlike the season opener at Union, Borgia fell to Duchesne.
Borgia (11-7) scored first getting a breakaway goal from Emily Grahl. Duchesne came back to tie it in the second half, taking advantage of a rebound.
When the teams still were tied after regulation and overtime, they went to penalty kicks.
Borgia scored first in penalty kicks and actually led by two goals before Duchesne came back to score on the final three shots to win.
“The Duchesne game was another hard-fought battle in the midfield,” Borgia Head Coach Jeff Hill said. “Possession was pretty even throughout the game and the overtimes. Both defenses played great, not allowing a lot of clear scoring chances.”
The Lady Knights return to action Monday in the Class 2 District 7 Tournament in Sullivan.
Borgia, the top seed, will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Sullivan and St. Clair. Borgia’s Monday game starts at 5 p.m. Union is the second seed and will play Pacific Monday at 7 p.m.
The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday.
“Districts will be tough to get through with just about every team having a chance to win the title,” Hill said. “Union has got to be the co-favorite to get through along with us. We are very evenly matched and played to a 0-0 draw early in the season. Pacific, St. Clair and Sullivan all have great coaching staffs and play with a lot of heart so you really can’t take any game for granted from here on out. We have played a very challenging schedule, and we are playing well right now so I think we are ready. It will be fun to watch all of these games and may the best team come out on top to represent our district in the sectional.”
