Brad Carpenter has added another item to his already-impressive golf resume.

His latest entry — 2014 district champion.

A Washington High School senior, Carpenter won the Class 4 District 4 Golf Tournament on Tuesday at Wolf Hollow Golf Club.

That’s not all. Carpenter’s performance propelled the Blue Jays to second-place in the team standings.

The top two teams at the district tourney advance in the postseason. With that, all of the Blue Jays will move on to next week’s sectional golf tournament.

“It was an awesome day for Washington golf,” Blue Jays Coach Tim Buschmann said.

Buschmann added this may be the first time in school history that Washington has had its entire golf team advance to a sectional.

With three golfers finishing in the top 12, Timberland captured the district team crown with a score of 318. Washington finished second, just two strokes back with a 320. Timberland is the defending Class 4 state champion. Francis Howell finished third in the team standings with a 331, Francis Howell Central (340) was fourth, and Francis Howell North (340) finished fifth. Fort Zumwalt West (346), Holt (352), Troy Buchanan (354), Zumwalt East (361), Zumwalt South (363), and Zumwalt North (379) finished sixth through 11th to round out the field.

The long and scenic Wolf Hollow course, with its many elevation changes, proved tough for many of the golfers.

Not Carpenter.

A two-time state medalist, Carpenter carded a four-under par 67 to earn medalist honors in District 4. A Missouri State University-signee, Carpenter was the only golfer to finish under par at the event, and he was four strokes better than the second place finisher.

“Brad was simply brilliant,” Buschmann said. “He drove the ball extremely well — long and straight. The kids he was playing with are all very good. I expect all to qualify for state. Playing with this talent makes Brad play better. He truly has a talent for the game of golf.”

Timberland’s Zachary Cutler and Joshua O’Hearn finished second and third, respectively. Cutler finished with a 71 (even par) to earn the runner-up spot, and O’Hearn was three strokes over with a 74.

Cody Pingleton of Francis Howell North and Chris Wootten of Francis Howell tied for fourth place, as both were four over.

Washington’s Matt Hoemann took sixth place with a 77, six strokes over par.

“Freshman Matt Hoemann really played well, carding a 77,” Buschmann said. “He putted well, having four putts over 20 feet to save par. Matt doesn’t drive real long, but he kept it in the fairway which helped.”

Golfers finishing seventh through 10th were Jacob Williams of Troy Buchanan, Ricky Barrett of Francis Howell Central, Dylan Clay of Holt, and Blake Porter of Francis Howell.

Washington’s Hunter Mahon finished 22nd with his score of 87 (16 over par), teammate Eric Hasenjaeger was 31st with an 89, and Sebastian Hommes finished 36th with a 91.

“Hunter Mahon made the turn two over but shot an 11 on a par four, then doubled the next hole,” Buschmann said. “After that he calmed down and finished strong. Eric Hasenjaeger, by his own admission, did not play well. Putting was his downfall. Sebastian struggled in the beginning, carding an eight on the opening par four, but steadied himself, managing two birdies later in the round.”

Buschmann added that Wolf Hollow was a great location for the event.

“Wolf Hollow did an excellent job as host, the course was in great shape, the greens had been rolled Monday and Tuesday and were lightning fast,” Buschmann said. “We played the ball down and from the blue tees, so Wolf Hollow was quite the challenge. But it was the best weather day of the year ... lots of sun.”

It was also a day to remember for the Blue Jays, who are now preparing for the sectional tourney.

The Class 4 Sectional will be held on Monday, May 12, at The Links Dardenne with a 9 a.m. start time. Francis Howell Central is the host school.

The sectional will feature qualifying golfers from Districts 3 and 4.
