It was more than just a regular season victory for the St. Clair volleyball team.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-0) opened the season Thursday with a victory at Potosi, 27-25, 18-25, 25-23.
The game featured St. Clair Head Coach Ashley Mims, a Potosi graduate, going against her father, Potosi Head Coach Gary Mims.
Father defeated daughter in last season’s opener, but the Lady Bulldogs didn’t let that happen again, nailing down a close third and deciding game.
“It didn’t sink in that I beat Dad until I was at the scorer’s table after the match,” Ashley Mims said. “My mom was excited. She was trying not to show any favorites. I know my dad was proud of me.”
Mims said she was even prouder of her team.
“It was a great match. Everybody was on the edge of their seat. Our kids on the floor and on the bench were fired up,” Mims said. “We were behind in all three games. We were down 22-16 in the first game and came back to win. In the third game, we were down by four points and came back.”
Bouncing back from a sprained thumb, Sam Deason led St. Clair’s attack with 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks.
“Sam was a little rusty, but still had a good match,” Mims said.
Allison Hinson finished the match with eight kills, nine digs and one service ace.
Macy Levvintre added seven kills, three digs and two aces.
Abby Ruck collected five kills, 10 assists, two blocks and one ace.
Miranda Murphy registered 17 assists, six digs and one ace.
“Miranda stepped it up,” Mims said. “She made some diving saves in the third game. Without those plays, we wouldn’t have won.”
Katelyn Guehne had three kills and two blocks.
Halley Cokley added two kills and two blocks.
Hannah Krouper had six digs.
“Our girls were so pumped and ready to play Potosi. It’s almost become our biggest rivalry game of the year,” Mims said. “The girls did a great job communicating with each other, moving their feet and competed really well. I’m really proud of them.”
Potosi defeated St. Clair in the freshman and junior varsity matches.
The Lady Bulldogs play their home opener Tuesday against Waynesville at 5 p.m.
