Billy Rombach’s fourth-place finish paced Borgia’s wrestling effort Saturday at the McCluer South-Berkeley Tournament.

Borgia brought four wrestlers to the event and Rombach’s finish was Borgia’s highest of the day.

“I am very proud of the guys for their amount of improvement all around and how they never gave up,” Borgia Head Coach Brad Jacquin said. “They wrestled all matches very competitively.”

With only four wrestlers, Borgia didn’t concern itself with team scores.

“Team standings don’t mean anything to us since we only have four guys,” Jacquin said. “We need more guys to fill all 14 weight classes before we start keeping track of that.”

Rombach (182) opened the event with a bye and then pinned St. James’ Robert Watson in the quarterfinals in 1:53.

In the semifinals, Rombach was pinned by Lift for Life’s Darrion Glover in 1:05. Rombach bounced back with a 3:38 pin of McCluer North’s Alex Osei.

In the third-place bout, Watson pinned Rombach in 2:34.

Hunter Warmack placed sixth in the 170-pound division.

Opening with a bye, Warmack lost by a technical fall to Gavin Marmonti of Festus in the quarterfinals, 17-2.

Moving to the consolation bracket, Warmack pinned Christopher Rice of Lift for Life in 3:29 and then pinned Coty Barnes of Cleveland in 4:01.

In the consolation semifinals, Affton’s Rickey Duver picked up a 7-1 decision over Warmack. In the fifth-place match, Zach Siebert of Maplewood pinned Warmack in 3:08.

Borgia’s other two wrestlers, Jacob Sander (132) and Dylan Voss (145) each placed seventh.

Sander opened with a bye and then lost in the quarterfinals to Seth Thompson of St. James by a pin in 1:48.

Sander pinned Festus’ Kade Stevenson in 3:25, but then lost to McCluer’s Chris Minton by a pin in 4:24.

In the seventh-place bout, Sander finished with a win, beating Alec May of Maplewood by an 11-0 major decision.

Voss also opened with a bye, but then was pinned by Affton’s Peter Siegel in the quarterfinals in 1:27.

Boss bounced back to pin Christian’s Luke Tunnell in 1:54 before losing to Taylor Busche of St. James in 5:33.

In the seventh-place bout, Voss pinned Lift for Life’s Duston Mallard in 1:49.

Borgia wrestles at the Archdiocesan Athletic Association championships at St. Charles Lutheran Jan. 30 and the University City Tourney Feb. 2.
