Washington has done something twice this softball season that no other team has done even once — beaten Warrenton.

The Lady Jays (15-8) snapped Warrenton’s 17-game winning streak, defeating the Lady Warriors (19-2) for the second time this season Tuesday at Lakeview Park on senior night, 8-4.

“It’s nice for us that we’re the only team that’s beaten Warrenton to this point of the season,” said Washington Head Coach Phil King. “We had runners in scoring position almost every inning, so I wasn’t worried about our offense. It was just keeping their offense from clicking. Their top four hitters are pretty legit.”

With the game tied 4-4, the Lady Jays scored two runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.

“I guess Washington has our number,” said Warrenton Head Coach Trevor Hibbs. “They’ve got a nice hitting team and a good defense. They put the pressure on us with their offense. They got down some bunts and we made some poor decisions defensively.”

Washington jumped to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning and one in the third.

Megan Freitag got the Lady Jays going with a solo home run in the second inning.

The Lady Warriors tied the game 4-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Katie Irwin pitched the first five innings for Washington to earn the win. She allowed four runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Brooke Smith worked two scoreless frames in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

“Katie did a great job,” King said. “She had the one rough inning, so we just changed the pace and got Brooke in there to give them a different look. They both did great.”

Freitag paced the Washington offense with three hits, including a home run and a double, and two runs. She also was hit by a pitch.

“Freitag always has a nice game, even when the stats don’t show it,” King said.

Elanna Osthoff also had three hits to go with two RBIs and two runs. Becca Daugherty added two hits.

Kaelie Smith (double), MC Landolt, Courtney Kedroski and Abbey Martin each added one hit. Martin had two RBIs.

Jennah Garrison pitched all six innings for Warrenton. She allowed eight runs, four earned, on 13 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Anderson and Rugh both collected two hits for Warrenton. Rugh added two RBIs.

There were no walks by either team in the game.

Washington’s seven seniors honored prior to the game were Lilli Mantle, Irwin, Daugherty, Martin, Smith, Landolt and Kedroski.

“It’s always nice to win on senior night. There’s a little added pressure there, but the girls came through,” King said. “The girls were focused. We’ve been on a roll since the Holt game. We’re getting hot at the right time. If we’re going to make any kind of noise in districts, this is the time where you have to be playing your best.”

Washington ended its regular season with a 9-1 victory Thursday at St. Charles.

Freitag hit a home run for the Lady Jays. Landolt collected three hits.

Brooke Smith pitched the first four innings and Irwin tossed the final three.

“I’m happy with our season. We started the season hot and we’re finishing hot,” King said. “We’ve had two tournament championships and 15 wins so far.”

Washington is seeded third for next week’s Class 4 District 3 Tournament. The Lady Jays host sixth-seeded Pacific Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at Lakeview Park.

The winner plays at second-seeded Lafayette in the semifinals Thursday at 4:15 p.m. Eureka is the top seed. The championship game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11, at Rockwood Summit at 4:15 p.m.
