The Four Rivers Conference girls basketball race just keeps getting more interesting by the day.

After Monday’s action, Hermann and Sullivan are tied at the top of the league standings at 5-1.

Union and St. James are a game behind at 4-2. And the two teams at the top of the standings play the teams a game back Thursday.

The Lady ’Cats, 15-7 overall, picked up a league win Friday in Owensville, 64-50, but lost at Sullivan Monday, 58-47.

“Sullivan is a real good team,” Union Head Coach Grant Young said. “Now we can’t look back at this game. We have to focus on Hermann and hope St. James can help us for a share of the conference title.”

Union has a home game Thursday against Hermann, which could play a role in determining the final league winner.

Sullivan still has St. James left, so if Union and St. James win Thursday, it will be a four-way tie for the league championship.

The Four Rivers Conference race features teams which have at least 10 wins apiece. Three of the teams are at 19 wins or higher. Hermann and St. James each have 20 wins while Sullivan is at 19 victories.

Pacific, Union and New Haven have 14 or more wins. Owensville has won two games while St. Clair has 10 wins.

Owensville

Union’s 64-50 win over Owensville Friday night kept Union with the league leaders at 4-1 in conference play. Owensville, which recently knocked Pacific from the ranks of the league leaders, dropped to 1-4 in the FRC with the loss to Union.

“We put a complete game together for four quarters,” Young said. “We needed to play at our pace and late game. I thought Owensville showed tired legs.”

Union led 13-9 after one quarter and 29-16 at the half. Owensville cut into Union’s lead in the third quarter, but Union led 44-33.

“We struggled with free throws for the game shooting 16 of 29,” Young said. “But we went 14-22 in the fourth. We do a great job attacking the basket and getting to the line.”

Sophomore Bethany Coons tore up the Owensville defense for 26 points.

“Bethany was on fire first half scoring 18 in the half and 26 for the game,” Young said.

Senior Alyssa Coons scored 12 points with a pair of three-point baskets.

Senior Whitney Vitt ended the game with eight points.

Senior Rachael Bassett scored six points.

Senior Abbie Brack ended with six points, all from the free-throw line. She hit six of her eight chances.

Senior Jillian Johnston ended the game with four points.

“Jill Johnston had a great game going 2-2 from the floor and gave us great energy,” Young said.

Sophomore Bri Clark came up to score two points.

Union was paced by Hailey Diestelkamp, who netted 20 points.

Brookelyn Limberg netted 13 points for the Dutchgirls.

Also, Taylor Payne scored seven points, Mandie Robertson ended with six and Kayla Charboneau and Jaelyn Gauer added two points apiece.

Also for Union, the junior varsity team captured its third tournament title of the season Saturday with a 36-32 win over Sullivan. Union improved to 20-2 with the victory.

Sullivan

Sullivan kept its title hopes alive Monday at home while hurting Union’s championship chances, 58-47.

“We couldn’t get over the hump and make a big basket at crucial times of the game,” Young said. “Give Sullivan a lot of credit, they did a great job of closing out to our shooters not letting us get good looks second half after hitting five threes in the first half.”

Sullivan opened the game with an 18-10 first quarter and led 32-21 at the half.

The Lady Eagles were up 47-33 after three quarters.

Taylor Lucas led Sullivan with 12 points.

Aley Lucas concluded with 11 points.

Demi Reed ended the game with 10 points.

Tessa Johanning scored nine points while Sierra Pryor added seven, Kaitlynn Hill checked in with five points while Megan Brandt and Jessica Heinle scored two points apiece.

Against Sullivan, Bethany Coons again had a huge game, scoring 25 points.

“Bethany had a good game attacking the basket and making things happen for us,” Young said.

Vitt closed with nine points.

Bassett scored five points while Brack and Alyssa Coons netted three points apiece. Anna Houston scored two points.
