Despite falling to eventual champion Washington in the semifinals, the Union softball Lady ’Cats brought home third place from the Ft. Zumwalt North Tournament Saturday.

“Congratulations to Washington on winning the tournament,” said Union Head Coach Bill Juengel.

Union (14-6) opened the event with an 8-2 win over Trinity Friday night, but lost 7-4 to Washington in the semifinals. The Lady ’Cats bounced back to win 1-0 over Hazelwood West in the third-place contest.

Trinity

Union rolled to a victory in its first game Friday, beating Trinity 8-2.

“We were able to get the bats going and score some runs later in the game,” Juengel said.

Union scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings before tacking on five in the bottom of the sixth. Trinity scored in the second and fifth innings.

Janna Ruether pitched for Union and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. She struck out five.

“Janna Ruether pitched a good game with the defense playing well behind her,” Juengel said.

Kayla Kelly paced the offense with two hits, including a double. She drove in four of the runs.

Sam Wickes also had two hits and scored once. Courntey Zweifel had one hit and three runs.

Others with hits were Tara Nolkemper and Ruether. Megan Altemueller, Ruether, Jordan Thorpe and Kirsten Dierberg also crossed the plate.

Nolkemper and Thorpe drove in the other runs.

Altemueller and Shelby Miller drew one walk apiece.

Washington

Union opened with a run in the bottom of the first, but Washington scored four in the third and one in the fifth.

Union added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Washington scored twice in the seventh and Union added one final run.

Sheena Carroll pitched for Union and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three.

Miller had two hits and one RBI. Jerica Reeser had the only extra-base hit, a double.

Dierberg, Kelly and Thorpe singled. Zweifel walked twice, stole a base and scored three runs. Reeser scored the other run.

Dierberg and Thorpe posted the other RBIs.

Ruether walked and Wickes added a sacrifice.

Hazelwood West

Ruether posted the shutout, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out six.

Union had trouble against Hazelwood West’s pitcher as well, only scoring in the top of the seventh.

Ruether scored the winning run with Thorpe driving her home.

“Both teams made some pretty good plays in the field to hold the other scoreless for a majority of the game,” Juengel said. “Janna Ruether walked to lead off the seventh. A sacrifice bunt advanced her to second and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Jordan Thorpe came through with a base hit to right to score the game’s only run.”

Altemueller doubled in the game while Reeser, Thorpe and Zweifel hit singles.

Ruether drew a walk. Altemueller added a sacrifice.
