St. Charles Tops Blue Jays for Tournament Crown

St. Charles completed an impressive three-game run through the Washington Boys Basketball Tournament with the championship crown Saturday night.

The second-seeded Pirates (13-3) knocked off defending tournament champion and top-seeded Washington, 57-37.

St. Charles held the lead throughout the game.

Once trailing by 13 points midway through the second quarter, the Blue Jays pulled to within 34-31 with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter, but got no closer.

St. Charles responded with a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to put the game away, 48-31.

Washington (9-6) was led by Ronnie Suggs, who scored 18 points. Jacob Mulkey added eight points.

Casey Teson paced the Pirates with 16 points. Luke Joslin added 15 points.

In other action Saturday at the Washington Tournament, third-seeded Borgia cruised to a 63-36 victory over fourth-seeded Bayless.

Walton Eckelkamp led the Knights (9-3) with 23 points. Joe Helfrich added 15 points.

Bayless (9-4) was led by Patrick Triplett, who scored 19 points.

Fifth-seeded Westminster (7-5) knocked off sixth-seeded Francis Howell Central (7-6) in the consolation contest, 83-71.

In the seventh-place game, eighth-seeded St. Clair topped seventh-seeded Ft. Zumwalt East, 61-46.

Damon Arnold led the Bulldogs (3-8) with 19 points. Reno Jones added 13 points.

Daniel Morris scored 16 points for the Lions (2-11).

Named to the Washington Tournament all-tournament team were:

• St. Charles junior Casey Teson;

• St. Charles senior Sam Kohrs;

• Washington senior Ronnie Suggs;

• Borgia sophomore Walton Eckelkamp;

• Bayless senior Patrick Triplett;

• Westminster senior Shane Benes; and

• St. Clair junior Damon Arnold.

Union Girls Basketball Tournament

Top-seeded Eureka defeated second-seeded Sullivan 49-46 in the championship game of the Union Girls Basketball Tournament.

Kelsey Tepen of Eureka was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In the third-place game, fourth-seeded Borgia knocked off third-seeded St. Charles West, 51-40.

Sixth-seeded Washington captured the consolation title with a win over fifth-seeded Helias, 44-32.

Seventh-seeded Union won the seventh-place game by forfeit over Madison Prep.
