Ending the regular season, the Borgia baseball Knights earned a 14-2 victory Wednesday at St. Dominic in O’Fallon.

“This game had a similar theme to our other wins this year,” Borgia Head Coach Rob Struckhoff said. “We had great pitching, great defense, and we took advantage of the other team’s mistakes. We belted out 13 hits, but we also had five walks, three hit batters, and two reach on errors.”

Borgia (14-6, 4-3) is seeded second in the Class 4 District 4 Tournament and will open play Monday at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field against either Priory or Union at 7 p.m.

“Overall, it was a great way for us to end the regular season,” Struckhoff said about the St. Dominic game. “Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into the district tournament.”

In its first season in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association, the Knights finished 4-3 with two losses to Duchesne and one to league winner St. Mary’s.

While Borgia dominated the game, it still went the full seven innings.

Borgia scored six runs in the third and one in the fourth before St. Dominic put its two runs on the board in the fifth inning.

“We put runners on in the first two innings against their No. 1 pitcher, but couldn’t produce,” Struckhoff said. “However, we jumped all over their next pitcher in the third with six runs. The big blast was a grand slam by Noah Borgerding. He had a big day. It is good to see him getting hot at the right time.”

Borgerding went 2-4 on the day with a double and a home run. He also walked, scored once and drove in four runs.

“St. Dominic tried to make it interesting in the fifth,” Struckhoff said. “They scored two runs and had runners on second and third, but we were able to get out of it. We put the game away with a seven-run seventh.”

Borgia exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to finish out the offense.

Struckhoff said Borgia approached the game in a manner of getting ready for the district tournament.

“Both St. Dominic and us were preparing our pitchers for districts, so there were going to be a lot of pitching changes,” Struckhoff said.

Spencer Juergens started and earned the win. Over four innings, he allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four.

“Spencer Juergens had a nice start for us,” Struckhoff said. “He threw strikes and let his defense make plays. He was also able to work around a couple runners in scoring position with some big strikeouts. He’s only a sophomore, but he’s got good stuff and really has a good head on his shoulders. Nothing bothers him too much which is a good thing when playing baseball.”

Tyler Murray pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out one batter.

Tony Helfrich pitched the last two innings while allowing one hit. He struck out one.

“Tony Helfrich threw the final two innings and as usual didn’t give up anything,” Struckhoff said. “He’s not a vocal leader for us, but the other pitchers watch him and learn what it takes to be successful.”

Offensively, Borgia had eight different players record hits with four of them ending with two or more hits.

Grant Eckelkamp had the most hits, three, including a double. He scored twice and drove in one.

Mitchell Hammack posted two hits with two runs and two RBIs.

Helfrich had two hits, including a double. He scored a run and drove in two.

“We had contributions up and down the order,” Struckhoff said. “Grant had a big day for us with three hits and two runs scored. Justin Horace got on base three times also. Tony and Noah combined for six RBIs in the four and five spots in the order which was huge. Jacob Haskins singled and also took two hit by pitches. Mitchell Hammack added two singles which was good to see from him.”

Horace singled and walked twice. He scored three runs and drove in one.

Matt Jones recorded one hit, an RBI and a walk.

Haskins singled, sacrificed, was hit by two pitches, scored twice and drove in one run.

John Himmelberg had one hit and scored.

Michael Kren scored a run.
