At present, it appears that only the weather can halt the Union soccer Lady ’Cats.

Union improved to 4-0 on the season Monday with a 10-0 win over Festus (0-6) in the opening round of the Windsor Tournament.

“The score really doesn’t dictate the flow of the game,” said Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey. “At times during the first half, we struggled to connect passes the way we want to as a team. I would have liked to see more passing and moving off the ball. We had some great individual efforts all over the field. We just struggled to connect the play.”

The Lady ’Cats will face the host school in the tournament’s second round Wednesday at 6 p.m. The final round will take place Thursday.

So far this season, Union has outscored its competition by a combined total of 34-0 with the past two wins coming via 10-0 mercy shutouts.

In Monday’s win, Union scored seven goals in the first half and then added three more goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to stop it on the mercy rule.

Senior Alyssa Coons netted four goals with three assists. The St. Charles Community College recruit now has 11 goals and five assists.

Freshman Taylor Gaebe added a hat trick with three goals. She now has four goals and three assists on the season.

“It was a noteworthy performance by Taylor Gaebe, who scored three really nice goals,” Fennessey said.

Sophomore Bethany Coons continued her onslaught on the scoring column with two goals and two assists. She has 11 goals and seven assists for the season.

Senior defender Alicia Brueggemann scored one goal. She has posted two goals and one assist.

Sophomore midfielder Bri Clark added two assists. She now has one goal and four assists.

Freshman Natalie Helling and sophomore Emily Nowak recorded one assist apiece. Helling has one goal and two assists for the season. Nowak has assisted on three goals.

Senior Brianna Lakebrink posted the shutout, making two saves in net. For the season, she’s posted four shutouts while making 16 saves.
