With semifinal wins Monday in the Class 2 District 9 Soccer Tournament at St. Clair High School, top-seeded Borgia and second-seeded Union advanced to the championship match.

The Knights (12-6) won a 4-1 decision over fourth-seeded St. Clair.

The Wildcats (16-9) registered a 3-0 victory over third-seeded Warrenton.

The championship match was won Tuesday by Union on penalty kicks. The Wildcats advance to the Class 2 sectional round Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Borgia-St. Clair

In Monday’s first game, Borgia and St. Clair played scoreless soccer until the Knights broke through with a goal by Zach Schweissguth on a breakaway in the 34th minute.

Borgia led 1-0 at halftime.

The Knights added goals in the 46th and the 47th minutes by Adam Meyer and Schweissguth, increasing their lead to 3-0.

St. Clair (9-15) got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute on a goal by Jeremy Rego, making the score 3-1.

The scoring ended in the 58th minute when Borgia’s Ben Kang sent a corner kick to Jack Hellebusch, who knocked it in for a goal.

“St. Clair gave us a great game. They played with a lot of heart and with a lot of competitive spirit, which made them dangerous,” Kang said. “In the second half, we made some adjustments and our attacking became more dangerous. That’s when we were able to score three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half.”

Joe Scheuler was in goal for Borgia.

“Defensively, we did a good job. We limited the number of chances they had,” Kang said. “We played the defensive percentages the right way. We always like to see that.”

Tristan VanSickel handled the keeper duties for St. Clair.

“We played well. I’m extremely proud of the boys and the way they handled this game. We knew it was going to be tough and they fought the entire game. A few different bounces and we could have had another goal or two,” said St. Clair Head Coach Randy Roy. “It was a good season. The seniors will be missed and set the bar pretty high for the years to come.”

Union-Warrenton

In Monday’s second game, Union scored 15 minutes into the first half and never looked back against Warrenton.

The Wildcats took the lead when Alex Ciot slid a pass to Nick Schumaker, who knocked it in for a goal.

“We scored in the first 15 minutes of the game. In the previous games with Warrenton, we were able to do that as well,” Fennessey said. “For whatever reason, they gave up early and late goals in previous games, so we wanted to really focus on those times of the game.”

Schumaker struck again with a goal in the 38th minute, increasing Union’s lead to 2-0.

The Wildcats held the 2-0 advantage at intermission.

The lone goal of the second half was scored by Emmet Parker.

Trey Fink registered the shutout in goal.

“Nick played nicely at the striker position. He gave us a lot of chances through his hustle. Emmet and Nick have found their groove up top,” Fennessey said. “There wasn’t very much pressure on Trey and that’s the way we would like to keep it. The shots he did face, he saved with ease.”

St. Clair-Sullivan

St. Clair opened the tournament Saturday with a 1-0 overtime victory over fifth-seeded Sullivan.

“It was a great game. Both teams were ready to play and it was enjoyable to watch,” said Roy. “I was extremely proud of the boys.”

Austin Wells scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs eight minutes into overtime.

VanSickel registered the shutout in goal.

The Bulldogs missed a penalty kick in the first half.

“It was one of our best games defensively,” Roy said. “We tried to start plays from our back line and did a good job of trying to possess the ball.”
