By just three strokes, Washington fell short of a conference tournament golf championship.

Playing in the GAC Central Tournament Wednesday at Innsbrook Resort Golf Course, the Blue Jays had the individual champion and a total of three golfers place in the top five, but finished second in the team standings.

Holt claimed the GAC Central Tournament crown with a team score of 307. Washington finished in second place with 310. Ft. Zumwalt South placed third in the team standings with 338 followed by Ft. Zumwalt North with 358 and Ft. Zumwalt East with 372.

Counting regular season and the conference tournament, Holt edged Washington for the GAC Central overall crown.

“We ended up losing to Holt for the overall team conference title by one point,” said Washington Coach Tim Buschmann. “I’m upset for the kids, considering we beat Holt by 16 strokes during our match this season and won all of our other conference matches as well.”

Washington’s Brad Carpenter was the individual champion in the tournament, carding an 18-hole round of one-over-par 71.

It was somewhat of an up and down day for Carpenter, who carded seven birdies, two bogeys, three double bogeys and six pars.

“Brad has awesome skills. He hits the ball long with all of his clubs and consistently hits fairways,” Buschmann said. “He has no poker face. You can immediately tell if he’s having a good round. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to play well. I’ve seen him improve from year to year.”

Finishing in a second-place tie in the tournament with rounds of four-over-par 74 were Washington’s Mark Stahlhuth and Holt’s Hunter Butler.

With his effort, Carpenter won the GAC Central golfer of the year award. He beat out Stahlhuth, who was the GAC North golfer of the year during the last two seasons.

“Mark is very ritualistic with his swing. He has the same setup each time. He’s very straight with all of his clubs,” Buschmann said. “He likes to talk and joke with others while he’s playing. He’s knowledgeable about the game from a rules and a history standpoint. He likes to talk about the PGA, past and present. He’s very good around the greens and thinks through his shot. He’s a great senior leader with younger golfers.”

Colbey Schuster placed fifth in the individual standings with a score of seven-over-par 77.

“Colbey is long with all of his clubs, mostly his irons. He’s a risk-taker when its necessary and is very competitive,” Buschmann said. “He’s helped with the younger JV golfers and is a good team leader. He really shot well at the beginning of the season, which helped the team get off to fast start. He has a good poker face. You can never tell how he’s doing.”

Washington’s Sebastian Hommes and Hunter Mahon also were among the top 25 medalists.

Hommes finished with a round of 88, which placed him in a three-way tie for 13th place.

Mahon carded a score of 89 to finish in 16th place.

All five of Holt’s golfers had scores of 85 or better, which was enough to overtake the Blue Jays.

In addition to Butler’s score of 74, Dylan Clay finished with 76 followed by Jacob Spiegal with 78, Charles Wray with 79 and Brady Busateri with 85.

Washington and Holt golfers made up the top seven places in the individual standings.

Seth Miller led Ft. Zumwalt South with a score of 79.

Austin Peters paced Ft. Zumwalt East with 81.

Matt Miller led Ft. Zumwalt North with 88.

Holt also won the junior varsity team title.

The GAC North Tournament also took place Wednesday at Innsbrook.

St. Charles West claimed the team title. Davis Soderberg of the Warriors was the individual champion.
