With the Four Rivers Conference baseball title on the line, Sullivan escaped Pacific with an extra-inning victory and the league championship.

The Eagles (14-4, 6-0) took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to have the Indians tie the game with five runs.

Sullivan came back with two runs in the top of the eighth inning and held on for an 8-6 victory.

“It was an uneventful game for us until we scored one run in the sixth inning and five in the seventh,” said Pacific Head Coach Jeff Reed. “We showed a lot of moxie in coming back the way we did against a pitcher who was dealing for the whole game.”

It’s been a banner school year for Sullivan High School athletics with seven FRC team championships.

Claiming FRC titles have been football, softball, boys cross country, boys basketball (shared with St. Clair), girls basketball (shared with Hermann), golf and baseball.

The Indians (7-5, 4-2) rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, 6-6, and had a chance to win it.

With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, Pacific had the bases loaded with two outs, but couldn’t push home the winning run.

After Sullivan scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Indians had runners at second and third bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t pull even.

“We definitely had our chances,” Reed said.

Sullivan scored three runs in the top of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning, where both teams scored one run to make it 4-1.

The Eagles increased their lead to 6-1 in the top of the seventh with two runs before the Indians came back with five runs in the bottom half.

Seth Mesey got the start on the mound for Sullivan. He pitched into the seventh inning before being lifted during Pacific’s rally. Matt Foster took over on the mound and earned the win. He also belted a home run.

Hank Vandaveer started for Pacific and worked six innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Drew Fonner, Tanner Brown and Austin Muich pitched in relief.

Both teams collected nine hits in the contest.

James Howie, Allen Fitzgerald, Brown and Vandaveer each finished with two hits.

Brown added two RBIs and two runs. Howie and Vandaveer both had one RBI. Fitzgerald also walked.

Hunter Finney finished with one hit, one walk and one run.

Tyler Straatmann walked and scored. Alex Rice drew a walk.

Noah Brocato and LB Smith both scored a run.

“Some of our kids learned how important it is not to allow more than three outs in an inning,” Reed said. “Good teams are going to take advantage of that. Every time we made a mistake, they scored.”
