Fast.

That's how Borgia's homecoming football game against Duchesne went.

The Pioneers (3-0) defeated the Knights (1-2) in an Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division game which took just two hours and 15 minutes, 35-7.

The first half took about an hour to be played as both teams kept the ball mainly on the ground.

The first drives for each team were time-eaters. Borgia rotated the ball between three different quarterbacks, juniors Justin Baylard and Drake Raftery and sophomore Kelan Winters.

Borgia moved into Duchesne territory on its opening drive before a fumble turned the ball over at the Duchesne 23 with 7:40 left in the first quarter.

The fumble was one of four for the Knights in the first half. Borgia lost two of them.

Duchesne marched down the field on its first drive and put the ball into the end zone on a four-yard pass from sophomore Nick Thiele to Alex Moore with 11:15 left in the second quarter. The extra-point kick failed.

Duchesne mainly tried to keep the ball on the ground in the first half with Thiele playing in place of injured veteran starter Clay Stulce.

Stulce suffered a knee injury and is out indefinitely.

For the half, Duchesne carried the ball 24 times for 116 yards and one touchdown.

The Pioneers scored again with 4:12 left in the half when Jared Mosquera scored on an 11-yard end-around. Trevor Korba kicked the extra point to make it 13-0.

Duchesne took advantage again with Mosquera breaking a 64-yard punt return down the right sideline with 2:11 to play in the half. Rick Leach powered in behind the large offensive line for the two-point conversion, making it 21-0.

Duchesne busted another long play early in the second half. Korba broke free for a 68-yard run down the left side with 10:00 left in the third  quarter. Moore ran for the two-point conversion and Duchesne extended its lead to 29-0.

Moore picked off a pass with 2:54 left in the quarter to give the Pioneers the ball at the Borgia 10.

Moore caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Thiele with 1:27 to go in the quarter. Korba's kick was blocked and the Pioneers led 35-0.

Raftery returned the kickoff into Duchesne territory, giving the Knights the ball on the 47 as time ran out in the third quarter.

But a fourth down pass a the Duchesne 25 was incomplete and the Pioneers took over again with just under eight minutes to play.

Borgia recovered a fumble at the Duchesne 20 with 6:20 left in the contest. Winters picked up a first down on the opening play of the drive.

Raftery took the next snap and passed into the end zone, but it fell incomplete.

Raftery ran down to the Duchesne 3 on the next play.

Rafterty ran in from three yards out with 4:09 left in the contest.

Borgia visits St. Mary's next Friday in another AAA Large Division contest.
