Staying perfect in Ninth District action, the Washington Post 218 Freshman team recorded victories over St. Peters and Wentzville.

Post 218 (8-3, 5-0) won Tuesday at home over St. Peters, 3-0, and triumphed Thursday at Wentzville, 10-7.

This weekend, Post 218 hosts Ste. Genevieve and Eureka Saturday. Washington plays Ste. Genevieve at 2:30 p.m. and Eureka at 7:30 p.m. Ste. Genevieve and Eureka play each other at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, Washington hosts Elsberry in Ninth District action at 1 p.m.

St. Peters

Kody Halmich tossed a three-hit shutout Tuesday as Post 218 defeated St. Peters, 3-0.

Halmich held the visitors to just three walks as well while striking out eight batters.

“We gave the ball to Kody Halmich and again in a big game he came up big for us,” Post 218 Manager Jordan Bierbaum said. “He has proven that he deserves the ball in every big game.”

Bierbaum said pitching and defense made a difference in the game.

“Pitching and defense was the name of the game,” said Bierbaum. “Our defense was sharp behind Kody and he did the rest recording some big strikeouts when needed.”

Washington broke through to take the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Post 218 added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Offensively, Trey Hunter and Nik Alferman each recorded two hits.

“At the plate Nik Alferman, Trey Hunter and Joe Grant lead the way,” Bierbaum said. “Joe has made a few minor adjustments to his swing and lately it’s paid off. If the heart of our order leads the way offensively, then you usually have a good game. We did just enough against a good St. Peters team and a pitcher who kept us off balance.”

Hunter scored twice and added a walk.

Alferman scored once, sacrificed and added a stolen base.

Also ending with hits were Daniel Diener and Joe Grant. Diener doubled and added a stolen base.

Grant drove in a run and walked.

Gus Kleekamp drew a walk. Halmich posted a sacrifice.

Wentzville

Wentzville took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Washington tied it in the third. Wentzville again went on top in the bottom of the third, 4-3.

In the fourth, Washington scored once while Wentzville tallied twice. Post 218 scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth. Wentzville scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Washington added two runs in the seventh.

“It was not the best game we have played,” Bierbaum said. “We won the game 9-6, but we gave them most of their runs off errors and mental breaks as they did with us.”

Diener led the way with three hits. Garrett Leimkuehler and Grant posted two hits each.

Hunter, Alferman and Halmich each had one hit.

Diener scored three times while Leimkuehler crossed the plate twice. Hunter, Grant, Will Davis, Kolby Lang and Halmich each scored once.

Leimkuehler, Blake Pickard and Davis drove in runs.

Davis walked three times. Pickard and Hunter each scored twice. Leimkuehler, Alferman and Grant each walked once.

Diener and Hunter were hit by pitches. Davis added a sacrifice. Leimkuehler, Diener, Pickard and Hunter stole bases.

“Really up and down the line up everyone contributed in one way or another,” Bierbaum said.

James Dyson was the winning pitcher, throwing three innings in relief. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out one.

“It was a game of who could bear down and throw a couple shutout innings,” Bierbaum said. “Fortunately for our team, James Dyson did that. This was his first appearance all year and in a tough game, he looked great.”

Kleekamp was the starting pitcher, going four innings while allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out two.
