Sullivan’s standout golf season continued Monday.

Playing in the Class 3 Sectional 3 Tournament at Marshfield Country Club, the Eagles advanced to the state meet, capturing first-place team honors with a score of 305.

“The kids really grinded, knowing every shot was important. They did a great job preparing by taking notes on the course during our practice round and studying those notes. They each had a plan on how to play the course and stuck to it,” said Sullivan Coach Dino McKinney. “Hopefully we can have a few more good practices and a practice round in Sedalia, and see what we can shoot. I’m very proud of their accomplishments thus far, but I know they would love to make a good showing at state.”

West Plains also qualified for state as a team, finishing second with a score of 318.

The top two teams and the top 12 individuals not from Sullivan or West Plains qualified for the state meet Monday and Tuesday in Sedalia.

Aurora placed third with 327 and Logan-Rogersville was fourth with 333.

With four golfers, Borgia posted a team score of 339 to finish fifth.

Borgia’s Clayton Voss and Sullivan’s Drew Armstrong posted the top score among area players, both carding four-over-par rounds of 74 to tie for fourth place.

Joining Armstrong for the Eagles were Justin Biermann with 76, Tylor Carrico with 77, Gavin Yociss with 78 and Ryan Juergens with 80.

Scores of 80 and better sent the sectional golfers to the state meet.

Borgia had two state qualifiers. Joining Voss was Alex Rennick, who finished with a round of 80.

Also playing for the Knights, but not qualifying, were Andrew McClure with 90 and Parker DuMontier with 96.

Pacific’s Brendan Jett-Kell advanced to the state meet with a round of 80.

Also playing for the Indians was Charlie Brinker, who shot an 89.

“I’m very proud of Brendan. It’s the second year in a row he’s qualified for state,” said Pacific Coach John VanLeer, who’s Jett-Kell’s uncle. “He played really well. He was at even-par through six holes. He had to make a six-foot putt on the final hole to get through.”

Representing St. Clair was Matt Gordon, who missed a spot at state by two strokes, finishing with an 82.

“I’m very proud of Matt. We played our practice round and looked at all the scores and said 82 would be a good bubble score. He finished the first nine holes nine-over par. He never quit playing and made a run of four birdies in seven holes to get himself in position,” said St. Clair Coach Casey Korn. “Matt has meant a lot to St. Clair golf. He has the respect of his teammates, competitors and the other coaches. He did things the right way for his four years.”

Union female Hinako Kishimoto also missed the qualifying cut by two strokes, posting a round of 82.

“Hinako put together her most solid round of the year. Unfortunately, she came up a couple of strokes short of qualifying for the state tournament,” said Union Coach Bill Juengel. “It was really a lot of fun having her on the team this year. She has skills that she has gained through practice, but the thing that impressed me the most was just her overall competitive, positive attitude toward the game. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her return to the states in a couple of years playing on the collegiate level if that’s what she chooses to do.”

St. James’ three golfers had their seasons come to an end. Playing for the Tigers were Jake Shockley with 85, Jack Mueller with 87 and Levi Auxier with 112.

Marshfield’s Clayton Moles won the individual title with an even-par 70.

Class 4 Sectional 2

Three Washington golfers played in the Class 4 Sectional 2 Tournament Monday at The Missouri Bluffs.

Advancing to the state meet were Colbey Schuster and Brad Carpenter.

Timberland won the sectional crown with a score of 307. Francis Howell also advanced to state, finishing second with 320.

Chaminade and DeSmet tied for third with 321. Parkway Central was fifth with 348.

The top two teams and the top 12 individuals not from Timberland or Francis Howell qualified for the state meet Monday and Tuesday at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.

Scores of 80 and better sent the sectional golfers to the state meet.

Schuster carded a one-under-par round of 70 to finish in second place overall.

“Colbey had a great round. He enjoys the course,” said Washington Coach Tim Buschmann. “His comments on the ride home were pretty low key. He said he pretty much did everything well.”

Carpenter tied for fourth place with a five-over round of 76.

“Brad never got on a roll, but he still played well enough to get through,” Buschmann said.

Mark Stahlhuth missed the cut by one stroke, finishing with an 81.

“I’m really proud of Colbey and Brad. They deserve it for the amount of time they’ve put in,” Buschmann said. “It was somewhat of a bittersweet tournament with Mark not making it through. It won’t sink in until we leave Sunday and he’s not there. Colbey and Brad were upset about it. They did not want to talk much about their rounds with their teammate not making it though.”

DeSmet’s James Siegfried won the individual title with a two-under 69.
