Finishing league play with a win on Senior Night, the Borgia volleyball Lady Knights secured second place in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division.

Borgia swept Bishop DuBourg Wednesday, 26-24, 25-14, to finish league action.

Borgia (14-10-3, 9-2) trailed 23-20 in the first game before coming back to win. In the second game, the Lady Knights cruised to victory.

Borgia honored five seniors — players, Hanna Glastetter, Katie Lindemann and Taylor Mentz, along with assistant Addy Brinkmann and manager Kortney Nolte.

“This was our last conference game, so it was nice to get the win,” Borgia Head Coach Brad Bruns said. “It was a good match, but we started a little sluggish. We ended up picking it up near the end of the first game and carried that momentum into the second game.”

Mentz and Erin Hillerman tied for the team lead in kills with seven.

“Taylor had an incredible night,” Bruns said. “Erin had a fantastic night too, recording seven kills in 11 attempts with no errors.”

Emma Kriete and Janie Arand each had four kills. Glastetter and Lindemann each had three while Sarah Geatley ended with two kills.

Janie Arand led the team with 30 assists as Borgia used a 5-1 setup.

“Janie did a good job running the 5-1 offense,” Bruns said.

Hillerman, Glastetter, Lindemann and Molly Arand each had one assist.

Molly Arand wore the libero jersey and led the team with nine digs. Mentz posted six, Jordan Kriete had five, Geatley ended with four, Clara Blatt and Janie Arand each had three and Maddie Toelke recorded one.

Janie Arand served four of the team’s six aces. Toelke and Mentz posted one apiece.

“Our serve receive was much better tonight, too,” said Bruns.

Borgia recorded the sweep, winning freshman and JV matches as well.

Last week the Lady Knights seemed to be closing in on an Archdiocesan Athletic Association championship.

However, road losses to Rosati-Kain and St. Dominic have pushed Borgia to second in the league’s large division.

“One of our goals was to win the conference,” Bruns said. “Obviously, we fell short.”

Both matches were similar. Borgia beat both schools easily early in the season at Borgia, but lost the road matches.

Rosati-Kain

Borgia suffered its first league defeat Wednesday on the road at Rosati-Kain, 29-27, 25-16.

“Our level of play was not up to par and Rosati-Kain played a great game,” Bruns said. “We panicked and we weren’t able to execute the small details. It was a disappointing loss and we’re going to have to learn from it and make sure we’re prepared for next week’s matches.”

The Lady Knights had chances to take the first game in the opponent’s gym, but could not finish it out. Reports indicated that Rosati-Kain had a large and loud crowd, which inspired the defending league champions to hand Borgia its first AAA loss.

Emma Kriete led Borgia with six kills while Glastetter chipped in with three. Hillerman, Lindemann, Geatley and Mentz each had two kills. Janie Arand closed with one.

Borgia served six aces with Molly Arand ending with three. Alivia Brinker, Janie Arand and Geatley had one apiece.

Geatley led the team with eight digs. Brinker had three, Janie Arand and Toelke each had two and Molly Arand and Mentz added one apiece.

Janie Arand had 10 assists and Toelke ended with nine.

Glastetter posted 1.5 blocks. Hillerman and Lindemann each had a block assist.

Borgia won the JV match. There was no freshman match.

St. Dominic

Monday’s 25-16, 25-18 setback proved to be especially frustrating for the entire team.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Bruns said.

Glastetter led the team in kills with five. Hillerman was the only player with a kill and no errors, ending with three. Geatley and Mentz also had three kills apiece. Janie Arand ended with two and Emma Kriete posted one.

Janie Arand recorded 14 of the team’s 17 assists. Toelke had the other three. Arand and Toelke also tied for the team’s lead in digs with six each. Brinker and Geatley each had four digs. Mentz added three while Molly Arand, Hillerman and Jordan Kriete each had one.

Glastetter had two blocks while Emma Kriete, Hillerman and Geatley each had a block assist.

Hillerman and Molly Arand served aces. Borgia had four service errors as well.

St. Dominic also won the JV match. Borgia claimed victory in the freshman match.
