Mother Nature gave last weekend off to the Pacific Post 320 Freshmen Legion baseball squad.
Pacific’s Ninth District home doubleheader Saturday against St. Peters was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Tuesday.
Pacific (7-6, 3-3) hosts Creve Coeur Friday at 6 p.m.
Post 320 is coming off a 6-2 loss at St. Charles Wednesday, June 19.
“We held a practice session last Friday to get ready for Saturday’s doubleheader, which wasn’t played. In that two-hour span, I thought we made some progress, especially at the plate,” said Post 320 Manager Nathan Bruns. “I was pleasantly surprised with how some of the guys picked up things we pointed out to them. Now we have to take those adjustments into our games. It was good to get some swings in, which could be crucial in the way our next few games are played.”
Bruns said Pacific’s offensive leaders this season have been Tristan Longsdon and Austin Muich.
“Tristan and Austin both are miles ahead of where I expect a hitter to be on the freshman level,” Bruns said. “They both have fluid swings, good mechanics and do a good job making adjustments.”
Cody Rettinghaus (St. Clair High School) also has given the team a lift.
“Cody has really come on strong, especially at the plate,” Bruns said. “He’s our leadoff hitter now. Whether I’ve hit him at the bottom or the top of the lineup, he’s responded well.”
Pacific’s top pitchers are Muich, Longsdon and Sam Fuchs, according to Bruns. Jacob Michael has been solid in a relief role.
“Our pitching has been a little rough at times. When Muich is on the mound, I have no worries,” Bruns said. “Austin is our ace. I’d put him up against anyone. He mixes his speeds really well and doesn’t give up many walks. He has excellent control. Austin and Tristan are our two hardest throwers. Tristan also has good control. He throws strikes.
“Sam is a pitch to contact guy who has good control. He wasn’t at his best in our last game against St. Charles, but I think he’ll bounce back and pitch well for the rest of the season. Jacob has done a heck of a job for us in relief. I hope to get him a start soon.”
