While Union is looking forward to its Pacific Girls Soccer Tournament semifinal against Washington Wednesday, it nearly didn’t happen.
Union held off De Soto Monday, 3-2, to advance on the winners’ bracket side of the tournament. Union and Washington meet in a semifinal game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
“We hope the weather holds up and we can play Washington Wednesday,” said Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey. “That will be an interesting game. A lot of the girls from both teams have played together for a long time. I’ve got a feeling it will be pretty emotional on both sides.”
Union fell behind with 41 seconds left in the half, but that’s not the way it ended.
Union moved quickly down the left side of the field and Bethany Coons crossed the ball to Alyssa Coons, who scored to knot the match at 1-1 with 20 seconds left in the half.
The Lady ’Cats made it 2-1 early in the second half, scoring in the first five minutes. Bethany Coons scored on a header after Brittany Faber crossed the ball to the far post.
“Brittany played a great ball into the back post,” Fennessey said. “It was nice to see us score in the first five minutes of the second half.”
De Soto came back. Kinsley Fitzpatrick was moved up from a defensive position and scored to tie it at 2-2.
“It got pretty intense for a while,” Fennessey said.
Kaila AuBuchon scored for Union with less than three minutes left in the contest to lift Union to the victory.
