Borgia and Sullivan recorded the top two teams scores and kept their golf seasons alive Monday at the Class 3 District 2 Tournament at Birch Creek Golf Club in Union.

The top two teams and the top 15 individuals not from the two qualifying teams advanced to Class 3 sectional competition Friday, May 4, at Franklin County Country Club.

The Knights recorded a team score of 313 to win the district championship.

“It was pretty exciting,” Borgia Coach Dave Neier said. “Our kids shot pretty well. You had to be able to adapt to the weather conditions. It was a good day for golf, but halfway through the round, the wind picked up. I think the Birch Creek crew did an exceptional job getting the course in shape.”

Sullivan finished second in the team standings with a team score of 329 to advance to the sectional meet.

“Our kids played very well,” said Sullivan Coach Dino McKinney. “I’m proud of their performance and hope we can take this momentum into sectionals and see what happens.”

Festus placed third with 376 followed by Pacific with 380, Hillsboro with 383, Owensville with 402, St. Clair with 421, Windsor with 445 and De Soto with 469.

Players from Borgia and Sullivan made up the top six individual scores in the tournament.

All five players from both the Knights and the Eagles placed in the top 15 to earn all-district honors.

Posting the top individual score was Borgia’s Cameron Stahlman, who carded an 18-hole round of one-over-par 73.

“He had a fantastic round,” Neier said.

Sullivan’s Drew Armstrong finished second, four shots over par with a round of 76.

Borgia’s Bryce Dolan, Alex Rennick and Clayton Voss each tied for third place with a round of 80, eight shots over par.

Sullivan’s Tylor Carrico finished sixth with a score of 81.

Also playing for Borgia was Alex Buschman, who finished tied for 13th with a round of 89.

Sullivan’s three other players were Justin Biermann, tied for seventh place with 84, Colton Philpot, tied for 11th place with 88, and Ryan Juergens, 15th place with 90.

A total of 15 golfers not from Borgia and Sullivan also qualified for sectional competition.

Leading the way was Festus’ Ali Abbas, who fired a 12-over-par round of 84.

Pacific had four golfers advance to sectional competition.

Those players were Brendan Jett-Kell with 84, Cullen VanLeer with 93, Austin Forister with 101 and Charlie Brinker with 102.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had four golfers come out of districts,” said Pacific Coach John VanLeer. “I’m proud of all four of them. Brendan is really starting to play well.”

St. Clair’s lone sectional qualifier was Matt Gordon, who fired a round of 96.

“Matt really played a better round than his score indicated. He had a few balls take a bad bounce or two and find the hazards. He really battled to keep the round at a score where he could advance to sectionals,” said St. Clair Coach Adam Fischer. “Matt and I are looking forward to sectionals at Franklin County Country Club next Friday.”

Owensville’s three sectional qualifiers were Luke Moritz with 88, Doug Hudnall with 101 and Dustin Nicks with 102.

Advancing from Hillsboro were Matt Jones with 86, Jacob Schlote with 92 and Michael R. Jackson with 101.

Festus’ other sectional qualifiers were Reid Karscig with 89 and Matt Santiago with 100.

De Soto’s Matt Scott also advanced with a round of 100. St. Clair’s four other golfers who ended their seasons were Tyler Cokley with 107, Justin Nunn with 109, Tyler Wilkinson with 109 and Tyler Sumner with 115.

“All of our golfers today struggled greatly. The team worked hard all year preparing for this tournament, but our team couldn’t find their groove,” Fischer said. “All five golfers struggled and shot their worst scores of the year. The wind was blowing pretty hard at times and I think we had a difficult time adjusting.”

Pacific’s Logan Armstrong ended his season with a round of 105.

Union’s two golfers saw their seasons come to an end. Playing for the Wildcats were Brennan Higgins with 114 and Brendan Hays with 139.

Other golfers from Owensville were Dillon Ellis with 111 and Blake Mehrhoff with 120.
