Playing in less than ideal golf conditions, Washington won a three-team meet over Borgia and St. Clair on a cold and windy day Wednesday at Wolf Hollow Golf Club.

The Blue Jays placed first with a team score of 154.

Borgia finished second with 172. St. Clair was third with 208.

“It’s a great start to the golf year with a victory over in-town rival Borgia and county rival St Clair. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams did an excellent job with dealing with the weather,” said Washington Coach Tim Buschmann. “Three weeks of practice rounds at Wolf Hollow have prepared us well for the conditions.”

Sharing individual medalist honors in the meet were Washington’s Brad Carpenter and Colbey Schuster, who both carded nine-hole rounds of even-par 36.

Mark Stahlhuth of the Blue Jays was right behind his two teammates, finishing with a score of 37.

Hunter Mahon recorded a score of 45. Sebastian Hommes shot 47.

“Colbey and Mark, both seniors, had impressive starts to the season. It’s good to see them start right where they left off last year,” Buschmann said. “Brad still is not 100 percent yet due to the extended basketball season. He will be in prime shape in a couple of weeks.”

Borgia was led by Clayton Voss, who fired a round of 39. Alex Rennick finished with a score of 42.

Also playing for the Knights were Josh Kleekamp with 45, Andrew McClure with 46 and Andrew Timpe with 52.

“It was good for us to get out and play against some great competition. Washington has a great team,” said Borgia Coach Dave Neier. “I think the cold weather effected a couple of our kids, but most of them just went out there and played golf.”

St. Clair, missing two of its varsity players, was led by Matt Gordon, who posted a round of 44.

Also playing for the Bulldogs were Colbie Viessman with 50, Kyle Juergens with 51, Ryan Cheatham with 63 and Skylar Holden with 65.

“We had four guys competing in their first varsity match and I thought we did alright. I saw some good scores on some different holes, but we have to eliminate the big score. There were a few too many OBs (out of bounds) and a lot of nerves,” said St. Clair Coach Casey Korn. “I think these are all scores we can have in our mind and work to improve on them as we practice this week. I’m excited to see how Brandon York and Ben Bardot do when given the opportunity. They were not there because of a field trip.”

Washington also won the junior varsity meet with a team score of 208. Borgia finished second with 218 and St. Clair was third with 259.

“The junior varsity victory was great to see,” Buschmann said. “We’ve struggled in years past with JV victories. Hopefully this year we can turn it around.”

WHS Meet

Washington won another three-team meet at Wolf Hollow Thursday over Warrenton and Ft. Zumwalt East.

The Blue Jays posted a team score of 148 and had all five golfers post a score under 40.

Leading the way was Schuster, who carded a nine-hole round of 36.

Carpenter and Stahlhuth both fired scores of 37. Hommes finished with 38. Mahon shot 39.

“Our varsity scores were awesome. We threw out 39 as our high score,” Buschmann said. “Thanks again to Wolf Hollow for all they do for us.”

Borgia Meets

Borgia lost Tuesday to Lutheran St. Charles at Bogey Hills Country Club, 195-245.

Voss led the Knights with a nine-hole round of 43. Rennick finished with 44.

Also playing for Borgia were McClure with 48, Jake Neier with 54, Timpe with 56 and Kleekamp with 57.

Playing Thursday at Franklin County Country Club, Borgia defeated Duchesne, 211-241.

Rennick was the meet’s medalist with a nine-hole round of 34.

“Alex had a great score,” Neier said.

Also playing for Borgia were Voss with 39, Kleekamp with 45, McClure with 46, Timpe with 47, Preston Marquart with 48 and Austin Schroeder with 63.
